I keep my tailgate locked but got a theft deterrent device from @christian06 as an added deterrent. Easy to install and color match looks like it’s stock.

When will you people learn...the best, and cheapest solution to tailgate theft is to not live in Comifornia.

Is using just one of Christian's anti-theft brackets standard operating procedure? Admittedly I haven't put it on yet, but I kinda just assumed I was buying two, so was surprised to find only one in the package when it showed up.

Only the passenger side of the tailgate has the notch that allows you to lift out and then remove the tailgate. So that's why only one.

Just finally getting around to installing my bracket I purchased some time ago, but have run across something weird…

Is whatever is smeared all over the two bolts and some of the inside of my actual tailgate normal?

If it is, so be it.

But if it’s something the first owner did in some strange attempt to prevent tailgate theft, I don’t want to crank on it trying to remove it and break or mess something up.

Any suggestions or clarification someone might be able to provide would be very much appreciated.

    Looks like some undercoating.
Make sure you clean the heads and give those screws a wack with a punch or a bit of heat, they can be tight!

I've never seen it, but it does look like some undercoating of some sort, don't know why they would do that, lol

Could be just some sort of grease someone used to try and get rid of a squeak. Just wipe off the excess.
