I have to do my valve cover gasket sometime this week and I was looking at these paired with an IMS. I’m at 150k miles with up to date maintenance. Is there such thing as “too high milage”
I don’t want to put unneeded stress on other parts that may break.
How much reliability am I compromising if I install these correctly?
If none then why didn’t Toyota design their cam gears like this?

I wouldn't think these would effect reliability one way or the other. It might increase longevity as the engine works slightly less hard.
Toyota has to appease the epa. Reburning some of the exhaust gases so they are slightly cleaner is one technique to do that.

Yes. About to do a small write up on it. But want a few more tanks of fuel to get better data points.

That would be nice data to have. This truck I'm doing is totally stock. Installing the IMS also and then a tune from OTT.

Read about the hellcats but seemed some were having issues with them. That was during COVID though

I've got about a year with the new cam gears in. Engine is stock, no mods or tunes, I'm coming up on 50,000 miles. I've got about 10k on the cam gears. Of those 10k miles about 5k were towing my teardrop from WA to TX, freeway flying solo there and exploring with my family coming back. I just (within the last month) installed a larger transmission cooler but haven't added any of those fill-ups to my mileage spreadsheet (yeah, I'm one of those guys). The engine is noticeably smoother at idle, enough so that my wife commented on it. My butt dyno doesn't notice any difference.

Mileage gets discussed quite a bit. Most of my driving, aside from road trips, is in town. Before the cam-gear I was averaging 13.58mpg. After the cam-gear I'm averaging 13.53, so not much of a difference. Those numbers don't include towing.

I have separate numbers for towing. Before the cam-gear I was averaging 13.23mpg (over about 10k miles). After the cam-gear I'm averaging 13.25 (over about 5k miles), so I'm pretty much in the same spot I was before. As I mentioned before, I've got almost 50k on the truck. I've towed the teardrop for 15k of those.

Note, I'm not using the total life-of truck mpg. For that I'm at 13.79 mpg. I had a long road trip early on where I was getting over 20mpg for multiple tanks and that trip really skews the numbers. I've added bumpers, sliders, canopy, and tires (235/85R16 General Grabber AT).

I can't personally say that I've gained anything from this mod other than a smoother sounding engine. It probably wasn't worth doing for me. On the same token, it's not worth undoing.

    (edited for punctuation)

@Louisd75 I just installed mine 2 mo ago. Thx for posting. Going to do a write up after todays fill up. That gives me 5 tanks before and 5 after.
