My life and health are better without alcohol. I reached the point, decades ago, where I have absolutely no desire for alcohol. And, it’s beautiful.

I encourage those on the path to freedom from alcohol to stick with it. It will get easier.

figured id mention my story in case it could help inspire anyone:

wonderful upbringing and family, hockey was a major part of life growing up
then i tore my acl at 18 right before playing college puck (Bryant, URI)
hung up my skates, and began to party at college, dropped out after 1.5 years

    drinking, smoking, coke

i knew i was on a bad path, even got a DUI at age 22

i kicked myself in the ass around age 23 or 24, my dad told me it was time to
get out, to the military, walmart stocking shelves, but i somehow convinced them i wanted to finish
    school

so i stopped drinking in that moment, stopped chasing crowds, focused on getting good grades, working, surfing, working out, walking, girls, positive hobbies. i graduated cum laude honors 3.7 GPA bach of sci in mgmt and worked in sales/finance ever since, and im 38 now
with a home owned for 10 years, good job, fiance and 2-year old daughter. typing this from my office now

support and a good network are wonderful, and i had that my whole life, but the choices you make on this type of level can only come from within. theres a good life after boozing - tough to envision at the time.
truth be told i did use green, solely, no alcohol, during this whole period too

8 years sober. Forgot about this thread. Lots of changes made. I didnt do the work in AA as suggested for 6.5 years and my life fell apart after a break up with someone in the program I was co dependant on.

Then one weekend In Dec 2003 around the 13th, went to AA looking for a little book meeting and landed in a big book meeting. When i looked up and aksed HOW? to my self, The chair person said turn to page 549 last paragraph and he read out loud

That meeting I found a sponsor and did the step work in a few months only to see a Full moon after my 8th step that lit up the night bright as day.

I now Sponser others and go to Alanon to help others out where I can.

Sunday will be 18 months (1.5 years) for me.
I have a lot going on in my head and had a little relationship trouble so I went to an AA meeting last week for the first time in... *checks watch* 17 months.
It was nice to be around some people who 'get it' but the culty AA vibes were stronger than at the secular meetings I used to go to so I probably won't be back to another one for a while.
