Is there a possibility of insurance telling you to go pound sand if airbag stock seats were replaced with non airbag ones?

The reality is that same insurance company can say the same about wheel spacers, bumpers, lifts, etc. Now there is a very gray area of using the NHTSA's own medical exemption regulations in order to "turn off the airbag". Its an exemption written before side airbags and thus not prohibited from the exemption. Therefore you could use their exemption to "turn off" the side airbag and by removing the airbag and seat you are effectively doing just that. We are testing it now with a couple in their 70s. Cannot go into any detail about their specific issue but once the NHTSA gives them the green light we will report back.

    Here is the form: https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/airbagswitchrequestform_03012017_v3.pdf

Repair bills aren’t a big deal. Medical bills on the other hand…I don’t think anyone wants to hear “if you didn’t take out the airbags, your spine wouldn’t sustain such injury”. Keep us posted.

The reality is there are exemptions and we are dealing with one now.

scheel-mann Seat Installation in a 100 Series Toyota Land Cruiser/LX470
We don't always get feedback on installs so its great when we get pics and some background into. In fact on this install we were able to improve our harness design but that a different post. For now:

Navigating the Toyota Tacoma Fold-Flat Passenger Seat Anomaly: A Guide for scheel-mann Seat Upgrades

The Unexpected Challenge: A Real-World Installation Puzzle

The phone rang late in the day. It was the installation shop, RPM Garage in Monrovia, but this time with a unique puzzle: a Toyota Tacoma Access Cab, a scheel-mann seat upgrade, and an unexpected snag. Our customer's truck, a 2009 model Tacoma, featured an uncommon "fold-flat" passenger seat, and its integrated mechanism was directly interfering with the mounting of the scheel-mann seat. It was an all-hands-on-deck moment for us at Tolerance Stack. We immediately began researching, diving into forums, scouring Toyota parts diagrams, and analyzing every image, including those sent from the shop...

Yeah yeah its not Tacoma specifically but it might be helpful for some that have a 100 Series Land Cruiser...

Thanks to the input from our very first 100 Series Land Cruiser installation, we were able to remedy the last piece of the seat heater puzzle. On all 100 Series and LX470s they came stock in the US with seat heaters. We were able to track down all of the connectors from Japan to build up the harnesses to KEEP your seat heater switches working, KEEP your seat belt warning, and KEEP your airbag light OFF when you upgrade to scheel-mann Vario seats.

Read all about what goes into it:
