Ever wonder how long a lifetime sized bottle of never seize lasts?

I bought a big bottle of never seize in about 1978. At this point there’s maybe an inch left in the bottle around the sides, with all of the compound gone from the middle. Now it’s so dry I can barely get any on the brush. So to answer the question of how long will it last, I’m going to say 47 years .

 

I purchased mine about the same year, still using it, and have plenty left. I remember asking the guy at NAPA if he had anything small, and his answer was no. I told him it's going to outlive me.

I was using up the bottle today "corrosion proofing" the Thule ladder rack on my Taco.
The factory concept was to pre-treat the allen c'sink fasteners with loc-tight.
Still the joints were loose, but the fasteners would not budge without heat.

Any ways, My bottle of never-seeze has to be as old as yours. I built the shop in '93 and brought the bottle with me, I admit, I stirred in a small amount of oil about 15 years ago to soften it up a bit.

Now it's down to the very last at the bottom. I went shopping today, bought some chain lube. I should have picked up a fresh bottle of Never seeze! Next time....

I did get it all over my hands though... like always.

p.s.

I put a wooden extension on an acid brush to replace the cap and dauber. That dauber brings up way too much when the bottle is full, and doesn't reach the bottom when the bottle starts to empty.

 

I have a bottle that’s over 40 years old. For some reason, you just have to get within 5 feet of it and it’s on your hands. Near impossible to wash off - Never seize laughs at Go-Jo…

 

You gonna get it on you just ordering it over the phone...

 

I use a standard size every year lol. Also we have spray anti seize as well.

 

Funny thread, I have a bottle that's very old too, but not 40 yrs, maybe 30. One good thing, don't have to worry about the cap on the bottle ever seizing up

 

I threw away a 20 year old bottle, middle used out, sides dry and crusty. Not worth the aggravation, just bought a new bottle.

 

I use a little tube, like a small toothpaste. You can dab on a tiny amount that way, and it probably lasts longer being all sealed up.

And you don't even have to squeeze it; just touch the bolt threads to the opening.

I hate those jar bottles with the brush built into the lid, it's like taking a bath in it.

 

Yeah, unless you're doing a large run of bolts that large angled brush is hard to keep from going rogue. With anti seize less is often more.

 

Here's one for ya...
I worked out of a Loco-Motive shop back in the day. The expeditor (tool room man) placed an order for some Never-Seize, enough to cover a dozen or so machinists (mechanic's). The order came in a week or so later on a pallet. 12 five gallon buckets of Never-Seize!!! We figured it was enough to last the whole eastern U.S. 50 years or so...

 

The date on the bottom of this says 310806 which is

August 31st, 2006

19 years young and it is still more than 1/2 full. Same texture as the day I bought it

this led me to wonder what anti seize is actually made of

its grease with different types of metal particles in it. and eventually the lesser density metals in the grease
crush to break and release the hardware

I’ve had good results returning my decades-old anti-sieze to nicely workable consistency using a few sprays of WD-40.

There aren’t many reasons to recommend WD-40, IMO, but this is one of them.

 

I keep buying new bottles of anti-seize (I like nickel based anti seize) not because I run out, but because every time I need it, I can't find my old bottle.

So by that standard, I run out every few months.

 

Lol, I have a small bucket of axle grease that my kids will have to throw away when I die. With the new unit bearings, I just don't use it any more. If I need a dab for something (like holding my hair in place..) I just reach for a tube of Red N Tacky, I keep on the shelf. As I dip out more, I just cut the cardboard tube down with my knife. It's about 5" tall now.

 

Add a little P/S fluid or oil and stir. It'll last longer than you think. Used a bottle for over 40yrs, still going.

 

Anti seize is my friend. I like the copper one better.

The wd40 trick works for when it gets too dry. Then stir with a screwdriver.
