my toyotacare warranty is due to expire in october. has anyone gone through the process of extending it and if so how much and for how many years was it? the transmission in these things seems super weird and i just dont have confidence in it in the long run. other factor i have is i have 285 tires so if something were to happen would the warranty even cover the transmission? TIA

i have never heard of toyota offering to extend the extended warranty.

Why don't you just save some money each month and build up your own "extended warranty" fund? The odds are you will never need that Toyota extended thing, or they would not be selling it to you! Don't let fear of the unknown drive you to buy something you will probably not need!

But then again, what the hell do I know?

The automatic transmission has been reliable. Wonky powerband? yes, but transmission has reliable.

Let us know how handy you are with a wrench. I’ve owned Toyota vehicles (MR2, Camrys, RAV4, Scion XD & XB, Corolla and my Tacoma) over the last 40 years and they all have been very reliable and never needed an extended warranty. I have replaced parts (CV shafts, motor mounts, radiator, wheel bearings) on some of those vehicles in my garage.

The money I have saved not buying an extended warranty could pay for a major repair I can’t fix it in my garage. If you can’t do some repairs yourself, then an extended warranty might be the way to go.

The transmission is actually one of the most reliable things about the 3rd gen.

Interesting timing because I asked the same question to my friend who works at my local Toyo dealership. He said they don't offer extensions/renewals for Toyo Care.

This is a great question and the replies are the same. I'd like to weigh in with a few extra thoughts that I hope comes across as informative and humorous.

    * As others have suggested, you are at a point where you should no longer be making payments on your truck. This means you just got a $500 per month raise. Seriously. Maybe more.

    * If you've ever listened to Dave Ramsey or read one of his books about leading yourself to "financial peace", the very first financial goal you should achieve is to have 6 months of living expenses ready. In cash. Like where you can go to your bank and say "I need my $20,000 (or whatever *your* number is) in hundred dollar bills. Right now. Chop chop. Put it in one of those zippered, ballistic pouches. I'll bring that back later.

    * Yeah, I get it, that can take a while. But that money is YOURS. A hypothetical transmission replacement can be saved in way less than a year. If you buy a 3rd party extended warranty, you are defeating that purpose. Which you probably will not need in the next 6 months.
    --------------------
Consumer Reports advises caution when considering extended auto warranties, highlighting that they can often be a costly gamble with limited benefits.
    Overview of Extended Auto Warranties
Extended auto warranties, also known as service plans, are designed to cover repairs after the factory warranty expires. However, Consumer Reports emphasizes that these warranties can be expensive, often adding thousands of dollars to the total cost of a vehicle. Many consumers find that they do not use these warranties, with surveys indicating that 55% of owners who purchased an extended warranty had not used it for repairs.

    * And YES the fine print is extremely restrictive. You're running 285 tires?!?!? Nope. Yup. Whatever the perspective, they can use that to void coverage on the transmission and more.
    ----------------
    It's a good question. Indeed.

    Best wishes!

What do you mean by "the transmission in these things seems super weird" ?
    Tacomas are pick up trucks.
Not Rolls Royce or Mercedes sedans.
Toyotas, Tacomas and their transmissions and major components are reliable the vast majority of the times.

I plan to do basic maintenance on my truck and hopefully on my son's truck when I visit him.

I'm thankful to 3rd gen owners who post maintenance and repair tutorial videos with helpful tips on things you must and must not do.

Just a semantics thing, Toyota care is the no cost maintenance. Toyota premium care (or extra care if you don’t opt for the highest coverage) is a “warranty”. You’re after the premium care, contact Jerry, he’s listed in several search results. Usually $900-1,500 depending on coverage you’re after.

im very handy and could replace a transmission myself if i really needed to. biggest issue would be the cost of replacement of course. When i say the "transmission seems weird" it just shifts awkwardly and seems to periodically wanna hold the truck back while off the accelerator as if the brakes are slightly pressed. but maybe thats just because its so slow to upshift. btw i do have the ott tune which made it shift much better than stock but still awkwardly to me anyways.

when was the last time you changed the trans fluid? Could be old fluid or low on fluid.

    what's a "never" truck ?
    23' ?
23' in proper writing of English would mean 23 feet.
do you mean a newer '23 as in 2023 ?
If it's a 2023 with only 16,000 miles in my opinion it's quite new and not enough miles to even call it broken in.
Don't know why you'd be worrying about problems or a warranty.

Toyota offers "Toyota Platinum" extended warranties. These warranties aren't "service warranties" but warranties that are identical to the initial 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on a new Tacoma. I live in Alaska, but purchased a Toyota Platinum 10-year/36,000-mile extended warranty from the person shown below (the local dealers want too much money for it). This is the second extended warranty I have purchased from Mr. Johnson. The first one was for a 2010 RAV4 V6 in 2011 and never never used it, and now another extended warranty for my wife's 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road, which I also hope that will never need it. I buy the extended warranty for my peace of mind. Toyota Platinum extended warranties cover you Toyota vehicle throughout the US and Canada.
