The front axle seals tend to leak on these trucks... or at least on my truck.

Toyota calls for a specialty tool to drive these seals, and tells us to drive them to a specific depth. The seals and their depth of seating different for each side of the truck:

    Driver side -- OEM PN 90311-47027, or National/Timken 710596

    Passenger side -- OEM PN 90311-47026, or National/Timken 710595

Note that there's a typo in the metric upper spec on the passenger side -- should be 5.8mm, as is obvious when comparing to the inch range.

It is well-known that you can use your old seal as a tool, to hammer the new one into place. Or, you can take a rod or piece of wood and carefully tap it in around the edges, checking the depth with a caliper. You can't really use a generic seal driver set, because that risks damaging the outer lip that protrudes from the seal body it to form a secondary "dust seal" against a metal flange "dust cover" on the inner end of the CV shaft. (FYI, that flange is Toyota PN 41336-04010 -- but any new or rebuilt CV axle should come with this pre-installed.) But be careful -- if you tap the seal in a millimeter too far, your axles will fall out and literally explode.

Stop smashing your thumb. Throw your old axle seals into the ocean where they belong. Put your caliper away and stop wasting time. This revolutionary device will let you seat your axle seals perfectly, every time. It is perfectly sized to lightly hold the seal as you begin installation. You can easily hold it by its edges as you drive the seal with a mallet. It will drive the passenger-side seal to a perfect 5.2 mm depth, and the driver-side seal to perfectly flush. Actually I haven't tried it on the driver's side, but it looks like it will work.

Available today for the low price of $389.99.

Or you can print it yourself, the STL is attached here. Print at 100% density, I manually placed voids to save material while remaining hopefully strong enough to be hammered. Worked once at least.

Really? I have pulled my axle many times. No reason to change the seal each time. No leaks

Well hopefully seating them correctly this time might put me in the same boat. Mine are always leaking, but I do a lot of off-road driving and go through cv boots like candy. I'll retract my claim that the seals should be replaced each time the axle is installed, although for $5/ea in bulk I will continue treating them as single-use components.

In any case this tool is convenient, if and when you need to replace the seals.
