Recently I’ve noticed that when I’m turning into a steep driveway or over speed bumps there’s a knocking sound/feeling that seems like it’s below me. Almost like water sloshing around. My steering wheel is also shuddering when I brake hard. I’ve got my truck loaded down with all my stuff as I’m driving to college, could these be related, just because of the added weight, or something else?

Mine would clunk and shake whenever I turned or hit a bump. Turned out to be the steering intermediate shaft. The sound was coming from inside the cab near the pedals where the rag joint it. There is a small plastic bushing that wears down or falls out cause a clunking and vibration in the wheel. The correct fix it to replace that section of shaft OR you can rig it by using some zip ties around the rag joint and in the area around where the bushing should be.

You could have a couple of issues.

    1) Shuddering steering wheel under (heavy) braking usually says to me "Worn Out & Warped Brake Rotors".
    2) Clunks, thunks, and dull noises usually says to me "Worn Out Ball Joint". Suspension or steering related.

Those are my first two gut instincts. Being loaded for college, unless you get it resolved beforehand, is a precaution to have a contingency plan in place in the unlikley event you break down. Just in case. Not to worry wort. Just be advised such conditions do not resolve themselves and just get gradually worse. At some point, you will need to take action.

BEST WISHES AT COLLEGE! This is the best advice I can give you below.

    Study like a Supernova Star.
    Party like a Rock Star.
    Fornicate like a Porn Star.

"I hope you have the time of your life..." Green Day

Oh, and get your Taco looked at soon. Cheers!

I think my steering wheel shudder was brake temp related. Noticed it going through the Rockies and it seemed to have gone away after stopping for gas and not driving through mountain passes anymore. But I’ll keep an eye on it.

As for the clunking I think it is similar to what Scrapla described, it is coming from further back in the cab but only when I’m turning and bouncing at the same time, not when I’m going straight. I’ll get it looked at as soon as I get done with my drive

Identify it before buying any parts. I use to just shoot the parts cannon at my issues and learned the hard way. I was told bad ball joints for my clunk but the sound was clearly coming from inside my cab near my feet. I found a thread on here about the intermediate shaft and sure enough that was my issues. Good luck!

I watched a bunch of videos on what bad ball joints sound like and what to look for and none of them matched up with my issue. All the seals look good.

Is there a chance you can find that thread again?

I can't find the thread but this is the video I watched that described my "clunking" sound perfectly. I was told ball joints but my sound was inside the cab near my feet. I ended up shoving zip ties in the joint to take up the slack of my damaged bushing and it held up a few years.
