Hello everyone, this is my first post.
I have a 2012 Tacoma 4.0L DOHC 24V V6 VVT-i 236hp engine, and the transmission is 5 Speed ECT-i automatic transmission with automatic slip differential. The tow rating is 3500lbs, but the camping trailer I want to buy is 4300lbs. I have looked at new TACO'S with towing packages, but my truck only has 115K on it, and has only needed maintenance done, so it is a very reliable truck. I believe if I add an engine and transmission cooler to my truck it raises the towing capacity to 6000lbs.
Are there any other accessories my truck would need? Would it be better to buy new?

What is the trailer? What is it’s gross weight and how much frontal area? Where will you be towing it? How much additional cargo in the cab and bed while towing? It’s not just about being rated to tow, but about being realistic about what you can tow

I did some more research and it looks like my 2nd gen TACO is not a good vehicle for towing so I am considering getting a Tundra, which I truly believe look like a box, or a much smaller trailer. I love my TACO so I am bummed.

You cannot increase your tow capacity by even one pound. The tow capacity is designated at the factory by the manufacturer. No matter what you do to your truck that number doesn’t increase. You can put new springs, shocks, air bags etc etc. the tow capacity remains the same. 3500 lbs is what it is and will always be. If you tow 4200lbs you’ll be towing heavy and illegally. If you have an accident while towing dirty and someone is injured your liability increases dramatically. Yes police accident investigators are trained to look for that. Even if you make it exactly like the factory tow package your tow capacity is still 3500 lbs.
You need a different truck if you want to tow 4200 lbs.

Probably need a 1/2 ton. If you want to stay in a smaller truck look at Ranger or Colorado. Both have vastly better torque, payload, and tow ratings. Tacoma gets about 2 mpg better but will cost a lot more

fyi. I kept my 2007 Tacoma but just bought a 2025 Colorado Trail Boss for towing. Chevys 2.7 turbo max has more power than the 5.0 V8 in my old F150. 400 to 600 lbs more payload than 4th generation Tacoma
