    Hey @Gen1TacoLady
You wanted a story, well here's one, a Halloween story, and it's a little scary :)

    Story Time with Gritto

    The Wild Hunt

There's a very ancient folk tale in Europe called the Wild Hunt.
The Norse (Viking) version is the most familiar, but the story is far older and most European countries have a variation.

In the time of year when Autumn is dying but Winter is yet to come, the boundary between the natural and supernatural is thin.
The gales of Autumn have begun.
Late in the evening, a storm blows up as a peasant is returning home.
He did not intend to be abroad so late.
Perhaps he was looking for a stray animal, no matter.

The wind howls and in it he can hear, faintly, the baying of hounds.
In the dark clouds scudding across the skies, he makes out Odin on his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir.
There is the sound of low thunder from his hooves as he gallops.
Odin is blowing a horn and is followed by ghostly spirits, all riding hard.
The peasant falls down in terror and lies still, hoping they will pass him by.
It's said that to see the Wild Hunt forebodes ill fortune.
After a time, he musters the courage to look up and the vision is gone.
Where the hunters were going and what they were pursuing he can only guess.
He hurries home and, shivering, tells his tale while sitting close to his hearth.

    -------

The great antiquity and persistence of this tale attests to its power.
C.S. Lewis in the climax of the third book of his Perelandra trilogy has his main characters see the Wild Hunt.
So the story is not quite dead yet.

The story speaks to fear and awe at the power of nature and other things... unseen.
Or maybe it's just a ripping good story to scare the kids with
    Or both?

Nowadays, we don't believe in that stuff.
And yet, perhaps we've had an eerie experience that can, in a small way, let us feel as that ignorant peasant did?

One day during Grouse season, I was hunting, alone.
    It was late October.
It was getting late and I was far from my truck as a storm blew up.
Black clouds scudded across the sky.
Then I heard it, howling... further up the mountainside.
The hair on the nape of my neck stood up and I shivered.

It was coyotes, of course :p
I chuckled at myself and just after sundown reached my truck.

    The End

Planning to ride up that way tomorrow. Totally wasn't expecting to get to ride on this trip but the lady and a good friend secretly coordinated to make it happen. The vibe on the island has been amazing.
