I asked this toyota service tech to do a detailed video of a block swap for the tacoma. He's a little late for me since I already have my long block in the works but he posted the tear down process.
In the video he talks about a guy that had the cam spin when taking the timing chain off. That was directed to me haha what a great dude.

Ah, I was wondering who “the guy at home” he kept referring to was. I’m glad to see a tech uploading some real content, will make the DIYer that much more confident.

 

I could cry right now not going to lie. Wow. So far no leaks. No engine codes. Running super smooth. So extatic for this to be completed by my hands.

What's the low-end throaty hollow knock sound?
can hear it a few times throughout the video, at the beginning when you initially throttle-up at first & then again...
Normal turbo noise, going through the hose from turbo to the intake / TB?
Not the whine...

 

not sure honestly the supercharger is so loud and rattly lol.

Yes pretty much the whole block swap process. Just have to go through the 20hrs and edit it so it's a simple step by step process video.

 

But, you hear it?

 

In the video yes. In person it just sounds like it did before. Trying to get into tech stream to reset everything and verify timing Yada Yada

Yeah, you definitely have an ear! So, I hooked up to the computer with techstream and cyl 4 was misfiring occasionally. I must have smashed the sparkplug as there was no gap. Set the gap and no more misfires, sounds much better. Thanks for pointing it out!

Did you check all the gaps to verify they were correct before rolling them in? Im guessing not, unless you dropped that one In the hole too hard...
Need to check all the gaps to spec, & cuz its TC factory spec may to be what you want...
Smashed electrode aside...
One of the most critical parts of tuning a super charger engine is proper sparkplug gap, Even if its lightly boosted as you seem to think..
Required gap may be totally different than what is listed on the underhood label or factory specs due to the SC...
If it pings under acceleration / boost, it can not only be fuel / air ratio, pcm tune, but sparkplug gap is even more important to eliminate detonation pinging..

Im sure its documented somewhere, as you stated, these motors have been boosted before....
I had a 1995 5.0 mustang with 14lb vortex s trim SC, aluminum highflow ported heads, cam, larger fuel pump, injectors, larger TB & MAF, ignition, etc you name it...
It pinged, needed the sparkplug gap lessened....
PIA, but part of doing a proper tune.
I did the research, thought I had a good starting point, wasnt good enough, had to go back in....
Oe of the reasons I hate SC motors these days, always need to tinker with them,
Always in the back of your head, am I doing internal damage.....

You obviously had yours come apart from pinging & yes, it could have been due to the PCM tune...
But at the same time, could have also been pinging due to improper sparkplug gap...
Detonation will kill this new engine again, in a heartbeat.

Need to use your ears, see if theres a spec listed somewhere from the guys that have this set-up dialed in.....

 

Agreed, I do need to go through and check all the gaps. The procharger installation manual for this truck stated .035 gap for the spark plugs as well as one heat range colder. So that would be the spec I'm going with.
