I have the MX4- the cables are the weak point. pretty easy to break into with a coat hanger. It's been broke into 3 times now. Mine is 2 yrs old & is already starting to crack at the rubber hinges. Had a Leer tri-fold on my 2009, much better quality cover & nobody is getting into that with a coat hanger. Backflip says their cover will support 300 lbs on top of it. Bullshit. Big regret not getting the Leer.

I’d think all you’d have to do if you’re worried about that is to cut the cable to eliminate the middle section where they join. You’d have rig up something to pull it and yank the cable on each side to open it but there won’t be a loop to catch with a coat hangar.

That with the power lock kit on the tailgate is about as secure as you could make the bed.

Decent price. I picked one up open box for ~$950 delivered.

I have the power lock, one of the 1st mods I did. The Bakflip went on the truck before I had 200 miles on it.
I installed 2 black plastic pieces in the gap where the cable hangs down after the 3rd break-in. I have to remember to even up the slack of the cable so one side doesn't hang down too far. So far, that has stopped the theft of my tools at Home Depot or Lowes parking lots. It blocks someone using a coat hanger to snag the cables. But the fact is- for the price, I shouldn't have to modify the product to keep my bed secure. That's their job & the most important reason I bought it. The leer uses a metal pinch lash & is a much better design. In 10 years, never broke into. I don't see this cover lasting more than a year or 2 more before the cracks get bigger & allow water intrusion. I will be replacing it with a Leer.
If you think the Bakflip MX4 will keep your stuff secure, think again. Not without mods.

We offer the MX4, its a great cover. The Lomax is another popular choice but the MX4 has been the most popular for the last couple years. Message me if you would like a quote

Here's one vote for the OEM cover. It is an absolute beast of a cover, I bet you could walk on it. I don't know why folks here are always saying it sucks. It's a bit on the heavy side, but I am able to remove and install it by myself and I am close to old geezer status. They frequently pop up on FBMP and CL for a good price.

Telling you, get GotExhausts quote first. Linked him in my last post and think hes replied here since then.

Also we got the same truck so just as a tip, the kits gonna have you lower your bed rails and the factory tightened my screws with the might of Odin. Got em all out but one that stripped from me fighting it and had to take it to my uncles shop as I didn't have any fixes at my apartment. We ended up just having to drill the screw out. The kit does come with its own stuff to replace the screws, but just be careful when you're removing your rails lol.

Edit: Oops, didn't mean to ping him again if that's what that did. Didn't use the @ so thought it wouldn't link him again. Sorry!

If security is your biggest concern, then the Bakflip is not what you need. I'm not sure which covers are better, but the Bakflip is very easy to break in to.

That being said, I've had the roll-up version for a couple years and it's been great. My first one had to get replaced under warranty because the adhesive on one of the supports let loose, but their customer service was good and they got me a replacement quickly.

Security wasn't a concern until it was. They need to do an update on the cables to make it more secure. Nothing is 100% secure but a pro with a coat hanger can get in faster than I can.

    Check build thread!
I have one. It's a decent cover, I wouldn't pay the new price again though. It's a 500 dollar cover priced at 1k.

If security was your primary concern / driver for buying one, then any tonneau cover has the potential to disappoint! Even the best / toughest cover (including my beloved OEM cover) can be defeated in about 2 seconds with a $10.00 Harbor Freight pry bar. These covers provide two "security" components; keeping your stuff out of sight, and providing a relatively dry place for your stuff. I'm not saying that they are not worth the money, as they certainly are. But buy one with proper expectations in mind!

The OE versions are almost always of poor quality

What an ignorant statement. You have no idea what you are talking about.

LOL! all i know is that three of my buddies each complained of their OEM covers breaking down in less than a year. Maybe they're just unlucky but it's enough to scare me away.

I’ve had one on mine for almost 2 years. It does its job and the finish is held up well. I got it on a Black Friday sale and saved about $300.

Keeps most of the water out, but I don’t think anything is water tight.

I concur with above post. None will keep the bed 100% dry but they probably all do a pretty good job.

The best time to buy (anything) is when you don't need it. So shop around. Better yet, find someone with a cover and
go look at it, yap with the driver about it. Make mental notes of the good/bad/ugly of the different ones.

The stock cover was installed by cutting away a part of the side and or top in the bed. This is visible when cover is removed.
Looking at the price of the mx4 now is $1150 and $1250 for the 6ft bed.
Problems with the Bakflip mx4 are .
    Scratches easily
Screw holes in the strap down drilled to large. I fixed it by using a larger diameter Screw.
My plastic on the rail at the tailgate cracked leaving the Latch mechanism hanging. I had to order a entire new rail just to replace the latch mechanism .
The rubber bumpers need to be maintained or your top will scratch when closed.
Prop rods fall off into the bed. I just applied blue loc tite stopped it for 7 years. Finally this year started again.
I don't know what toyota charges for the stock cover but the cutting on the bed of a new truck doesn't appeal to me.
