I’m looking for a little help/advice with identifying what I have currently on the floor of my 1st gen Tacoma. I’m working on sound deadening and insulating my 1996 Tacoma. After pulling the carpet I noticed the floor already had these hard rubber material over majority of the floor. I’m guessing it’s OEM sound deadening type material but not 100% what it is.

Is it asphalt, butyl rubber or something else. It’s hard with a tiny bit of squish. It gets softer and squishy when heated with a torch so I’m guessing butyl rubber? Do I take it off before I add the new butyl rubber or add the butyl rubber over it? I painted over everything with a black rust proofing enamel awhile ago and don’t remember what it looked like before.

Thank you any and all advice.

That is OEM. Many people just apply sound deadening right over the OEM stuff because it's difficult to remove it and adds a lot of time to the project.

You can remove loose pieces if need be.

Is it butyl rubber? Do I need to add butyl rubber over it or can I skip that area because it already has it on there?

It’s like a tar sound deadening
    Agree with super white
    Leave it…place new sounding over

if u don’t want that tar stuff
Buy some dry ice from grocery store
Leave DI on that tar stuff 10-15mins
Scrapes off easily with paint scraper

I(we) took off that stuff to make a race car 15lbs lighter
