Towing a utility trailer with 2 pallets of sod

I don't water our lawn - ever. It lives and dies by the water nature provides it. Most times it does OK, sometimes not, but it is reborn every year. It's like a green Avatar the Last Airbender, always coming back as a new and different Avatar.

HOA says you have to keep your lawn green. The city says there's water restrictions in place and you can't water at certain times of certain days.

Shame on the Colorado Legislature for allowing these builders to push KBG and other water intensive grasses here. The entire premise is nuts in my opinion.

 

Yeah, the local planning department should be advocating for less water-intensive landscaping. That's who could influence the developer/ HOA from the get go.

 

Within one week I'd be doing 25 to life if I lived in an HOA.

Six-lug hubs indicate at least 4500 pound axle capacity, but I agree, with a small single axle trailer I wouldn't try hauling both pallets even with brakes on the trailer axle. A tandem flatbed with a 10K capacity and brakes on both axles would be more appropriate

Mushrooms mean decaying matter in the soil, not necessarily healthy or fertile. They also propagate from spores, which is one reason you see "fairy rings" of mushrooms in a lawn and the visible mushroom is only 5% of the total plant, most of which is a fine matrix under the surface. Treat the lawn in early summer before the heat really gets started to control fungus. Both KBG and fescue are prone to "blue spot", a fungus that grows on the grass blades when it is hot and dry, and browns the grass.

Good point. I'm not that familiar with soil types in the Rockies or along its borders but I imagine it is sandier and rockier than here in the Southeast. To hold the root structure and enough water to feed either KBG or fescue you should have 8 inches minimum and preferably a foot or more of quality topsoil. This is one reason the turf rolls may seem to do better, but once placed they will need as much or more water to keep the grass healthy. I have one customer, for instance who has a drainage culvert running through her lawn parallel to the street about 15 feet in from the curb. Midsummer, once the regular Spring rains have stopped and summer T-storms are all we get for water, the grass dies over the top of the culvert because it only has about 8-10 inches max of soil over it (wasn't buried deep enough). Rest of the lawn stays pretty green until it gets really dry.

What Boomer says below is truth. I've seen a bag of seed that was damp germinate and sprout inside a closed metal garbage can, which is what I keep partial bags of seed in to keep mice from munching on it while stored in my barn.

From the looks of some of the other lawns I can see in your pictures, you seem to pay more attention to the HOA rules than your neighbors do. I agree, it's a stupid policy to have to follow. You can have green grass, but not without adequate water. Of course there is always spray paint, lol.

 

We rented a townhouse in a dev with an HOA once...once is all we needed to know when we looked to buy a house. Living with an HOA is like living in a police state.

 

I have a little time on my hands so I'm going to respond a little more in depth for what it's worth. I've been a golf course superintendent all my life. As such I don't necessarily understand why sod will work and seed won't. I can germinate seed on asphalt, getting it to grow is another story. If I had to guess, if you had problems starting from seed it was more likely sight prep and follow through. Out of necessity we've had to sod places on the courses I've worked at. Years after I can still see which areas were sodded. It looks weaker and doesn't perform as well. The other problem is, there is just a big difference between varieties of grass. A sod farm is not going to spend the extra money on the better performing varieties. That's the main reason I would go seed. As I think others may have stated a blend of three or four of the top performing varieties should be used.

Forget the sod and use native plants. The birds, bees and butterflies will love you for it and you can sell the lawn mower.

Screw the HOA! They don't pollinate crops that provide food, do they? Death to HOA's. Pollinators forever!

 

HOAs will be the death of themselves. There has been so much bad press and anecdotal videos about HOAs over the last few years, it's doing the opposite of the intended purpose - to maintain and improve the value of properties within the HOA by maintaining the quality and consistency of the group.

These days, people are more likely to NOT purchase a property within an HOA because of the unreasonable requirements and demands. The sad thing is not all HOAs act like police states - much depends on how egotistical and power hungry the board members are - but the bad ones make them all look bad.

 

Trying to grow grass in aired places is stupid. I kinda understand golf courses because of the popularity/ profit. But neighborhoods in the desert with green lawns is completely unsustainable. Just my opinion.

 

The Tacomas are great trucks but they in no way can haul what they say they are rated for! I had mine and it struggled to pull my 16 ft aluminum fishing boat at 3500 pounds. I had air bags and a a trans tune and you could feel every bit of it the entire time plus the 10 mpg.. If you want to haul loads by a full size truck I went to a super duty so now I don’t worry about what I can or can’t haul…

 

I'd be buying rolls of plastic grass. No idea how long it lasts but between the irrigation system, water bill and price of a lawn mower and the time to use it, it sure seems like a person would come out ahead.

Then again, no way in hell I'd live in an HOA situation.

 

I would wonder what the climate is where the OP lives. I understand it's Colorado but what would the highs and lows be and how much of a warm growing season they would see? I doubt it would be the case , but I asked because I would wonder if zoysia grass would be a possibility. Purdue University had a test plot at the golf course I worked at recently east of Indianapolis where it would see sub-zero temperatures almost every winter and experienced no winter kill. The question would be if the temperatures would remain high enough throughout the year to keep it out of dormancy. Of course you'd also need to switch over to a reel mower and incorporate airification to reduce thatch levels. Probably not worth it but it would address the limited irrigation aspect.

 

That trailer might cut it if you separate the grass from the dirt, leave the dirt behind, and replant the grass
