Just have to vent. Took my 2015 to dealer the other day to get frame inspected. It was sprayed about 3 years ago but is still showing signs of progressive rust. As is the entire underside of the truck. It literally looks like it was pulled out of the ocean. Get the inspection report and miraculously the frame passed, but they quoted me $10,500 worth of work to replace everything else thats rusted. Brake lines, tranny lines, entire steering/rack system, and pnp/shift cable. WTF. If it was body work, the truck would be totaled. Im at a complete loss, partly because i know all that shit really should probably replaced. Truck has 87000 miles on it. Body is mint. I dont know what to do literally. Opinions?

Dealers ALWAYS exaggerate the the amount of work that needs to be done. I wouldn’t do any of it. Get it WoolWaxed and forget about it.

Do you keep the underside washed after winter events?

That's a lot of rust. Looks like quite a bit of rust eating thru parts of the frame.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well. I live in NY about 45 miles north of the city. I definitely don't wash the underside of the truck after "events". I use the truck like I use any of my other cars. And they don't have half the rust this truck does.

John....dude.. that bites hard, it breaks my heart to see that. I hate to add insult to injury but it looks like that lower control arm bushing (by the cam adjuster in the second picture) is toast as well. If I'm seeing that right, the LCA has dropped down a bit.
I'd question if that's safe to drive.

Brother you live in upstate NY, you know it’s not a game with what they treat the roads with up there during the winter. Vehicles will usually only last 10 years tops from the manufacture date if the undercarriage isn’t sprayed yearly.
Also depends on how much exposure time the car sees in the winter.

I'd be taking a ball peen hammer to the frame in multiple places, especially around the catalytic converters since you are still under the 12 year frame replacement warranty.

So legit question and I’m not talking crap but I didn’t know wtf fluid film or woolwax was until I joined tacomaworld but I live inland Southern California but the most ideal location on earth as far as rust and Cars go

but I’m assuming people who live anywhere they salt the roads it would be common knowledge to use woolwax and or fluid film hell even I woolwax my frame because I camp all across the western us and get paranoid so it always baffles me when I see these posts so I’m assuming it’s not as common knowledge as I would assume it to be

I don't wish to be the bearer of bad news. But I will.

This 100% total and complete and negligent lack of undercarriage maintenance is on you. Seriously, you had it sprayed 3 years ago. With what? A can of WD40?

Even the best petroleum based anti-corrosion agents need to be reapplied annually.

Vent all you want. But at some point take a look in the mirror. Because you could have and should have crawled under your truck 24 months ago and done something. You own it.

    -------------
Way, way, way, way, way back in the day, when Sears and Craftsman tools were still a thing, I somehow managed to break a spade shovel handle. I wasn't even married at the time. This was 1991. I was working in the oilfields in Kern County CA.

And I was like "I wonder if Sears will replace this???". So I drove down to my local Sears store in Bakersfield CA and walked in very very very sheepishly. Embarrassed. I'm trying to return a *broken shovel*. I was going to buy other things, so I had somewhat of a lame excuse.

When I got to the service counter, the gentleman saw me and just sighed. Picture me holding out my two arms, one each with a broken half of a shovel. He didn't miss a beat. He simply stated to me

"It's OK. We still cover stupidity. Go grab a new shovel from the rack."
    --------

IT IS NOT LIKE THIS ANYMORE.

Same here in rusty Southern Ontario. No matter how much preaching, most people still can't be bothered with an annual anti-rust treatment. Many don't like the mess, the dripping and the smell. It also takes many years to see the benefits which might be why many people see no urgency.
