I think doctors are a nobel profession for sure, and the work to get there is excrutiating. I was a pre-med, then education major (biology teacher) in a former life... so I do appreciate them.

But I have a special island for lawyers, doctors, politicians.....hahahaha

Yea, I learned that while I couldn’t change the amount of money I made on my paycheck, I can always change the amount of money I spend.

    Your system should work

yeah, same here to a great extent. I tackle little things that I am familiar with, but, I have free tire rotation from DT, I have a buddy who has the same year Taco as mine that works at the auto section in Wally World and changes my oil and filter, that I supply. But bigger items, I drive down to my brothers place, who owns a transmission shop. Gives me an excuse for a road trip to see family and use his shop and bullshit with him as he helps me, or does the bigger jobs. Like upcoming spark plug swap.

did you disconnect them completely and push the button to fully discharge them before installing new batteries? If so, and they still chirp, chances are, you may need to replace them. Just speaking from personal experience.

ah crap, I did not know that. They are hardwired into the wall and yeah, as soon as I connect that hardwire they start going off. So I'll try what you said - disconnect, take batteries out, hold the test button down for 30 seconds, reinstall new batteries, reconnect to the wall with the hardwiring.

Very similar to what we have to do in IT with laptops, you have to disconnect them from the ac adapter at times, hold the power button down to discharge any juice that's being temp stored, then connect back to ac power.

    thank you sir.

I should add, when I was reonnecting and the alarm was going off, it was saying "Push test button" - I'm pushing it and it's not going off.........i'm sure my neighbors were happy!

I like to tip too. But I won't tip for poor service and if something is too expensive and I know it I will do it my self or do without. That kid that wanted to charge $600 for removing three limbs, the ones I removed myself in two hours with a circular saw and a ladder, is a good example. Not to put too fine a point on it, but f**k those guys that see white hair and think they can charge extra. I have no sympathy for them.

I had a new roof put on 3 years ago by a fellow who was recommended by a neighbor. He has done many roof's in the neighborhood and is very reasonably priced so he gets the jobs. He was approached by the owner of another company and was told he needs to raise his prices because he is so cheap he is hurting their business. So now the other companies in our area are telling people to beware because he is uninsured (lie) and doesn't follow up on warranty calls (lie 2). It is amazing what people will do to "cheat" people out of there money. I have been recommending the fellow who did my roof to everyone who ask if I know a good roofer and have always heard good news back . Honesty will win out in my book.

I got talked into opening an O'Reilly's store a while back. Small town with lots of competition that had been there for a while and were well liked. So I make a policy in the store that we would always be honest... even if it means we lose a sale. And if we don't have something, we call around and try to find it at one of the other local stores. Word gets around and we have 6K increases in sales every month.
But O'Reilly's gets wind of what I was doing, and they don't like it. They send a couple of people into the store to buy things, with a story. One was a young woman that came in to buy spark plugs, saying that "Her dad told her to change them every 18 thousand miles." As though she was working on a car from the '50s. So I told her she didn't need to change plugs so often, and why, and I knew right away she was an O'Reilly buyer planted to catch me being honest and losing a sale.
They did a few more things to establish a reason and they fired me. I knew it was coming... and I made it easy for them. As said... I'd been talked into it and had regretted doing it for a while. The district manager was a snake in the grass and would literally lie when the truth would serve him better.
The store sales tanked. The month after I left sales were half of what they had been. A couple of months later they cut the staff in half and reduced the hours that the store was open. And the guy that replaced me was fired. Last I heard the store has never recovered and that was many years ago.

Corporations expanded and put a major hurt on the Mom and Pop stores that always were the best deal. It's a shame they can't survive in the world today. Even small town USA doesn't have Mom and Pop stores anymore. I do miss them.

Amazon is a major problem for small retailers. Good friend runs a skateboard shop and it becomes a show room for kids, come in, look at something, note the price, then go home and order it from Bezos.....

I am trying to go cold turkey with Amazon. I really need to delete my Amazon account and force myself off of their platform.

    Afternoon all:

It's happening here Ken, our small town is now a pittance of what it once was concerning small businesses.

Got lucky this morning, I needed to go to PENDOT for my new photo drivers lic., went there at 10:30 and was next in line to get it.

My wife and I live with our oldest daughter and her family. My daughter is a physician and in charge of internal and family medicine for a very large clinic. We hear her stories at the dinner table when she makes it home in time for dinner which is not often, never names or any distinguishing or identifying details.

Her job is hard and heart breaking at times. When not at work she often times is dealing with medical phone calls 7 days a week. She has a fairly large panel (her patients) of older adults and it breaks her heart when one passes away. Even worse is when she has to deal with one of her young patients who she just referred to a specialist when she suspected something serious like cancer and it is confirmed.

I thought I was tough, I don't think I could do that job.

For sure, it's not easy, long hours, hard education, expensive education, etc. There's a reason why Canada pays for your medical schooling if you sign a contract to stay in Canada for 10 years to practice. That was told to me by a business owner in Windsor.

It's when the politics of medical care come into play that people get angry.

I deal with it at the VA and it's why I have taken private healthcare now. As I get older I see how crappy the VA is going to treat me and how little care they are going to provide. I am just a number and I am just a cost to them. Not to say that doesn't happen in private healthcare...but I trust them more at this point.

The FTC should have taken down Amazon for many "crimes" against the consumer.

1.Project Nessie - using an algorithm to manipulate the consumer and the prices they pay
    2. Monopoly - Bezos claims Walmart is a competitor, that's a joke.
    3. Taking non prime customers money, sitting on it for 3-4 days, then if you try to cancel, they tell you no. Ship it anyways.
    4. Amazon's expanding footprint into so many industries and trying to monopolize those too

Amazon is too powerful. It makes the 1995 Microsoft Antitrust case look like small potatoes.
