In NY your trade in value deducts the cost of the new vehicle on the paid sales tax. So if you have a $60k ram minus $30k trade in you’re only paying $30k of sales tax whereas private party sales results in $60k price sold and sales tax. You might be up on the private party sale but pay more in the end for the sales tax… something to consider.

How bad do you need the RV? If you don't buy the RV you won't need the Ram and you keep the Tacoma.

Not 100% yet on the RAM. We've been back and forth thinking about selling our motorhome the last 3 years and thinking it'd be easier and cheaper to sell the Class C and get a bigger truck to put a truck camper on the back. The 32' class c limits places we can get into. Especially the state parks. Might do a NY to Alaska road trip in the next few years and the truck camper would be the way to go. Away right now when I get home and sit in my Tacoma I might just delete this thread and keep it. Love it but id need the trade to do what we want.

Working on a lien delete for my title…..
A savvy dealer will keep the tax trade in his back pocket. Offer $30,000, say the tax trade is $1800, tell the dealer your trade is worth $32k, out comes the tax trade discussion.

At that point, the dealer benefits from the tax trade that should benefit the customer. A subsidized trade value, so to speak.

I’ve gone both ways with it, in the interest of determining real market value, the tax trade becomes less relevant IMO. That’s the benefit of a Carmax/Carvana style offer.

I’ve worked as a buyer for Carmax, Texas Direct and Vroom. In all three cases, dealers would send or drive their customers to us for appraisals. That tells me something.

I don’t think $30,500 is a total lowball offer, but I’m confident it factors in the tax credit.

To me, I’d retail price this truck at $34,998. A purchase price of $32,000 is attainable, but I’d be squeezing….

Also use NADA and Edmunds to get a value. You'd be surprised at the spread.
