Just had a buddy buy a JDM engine. He found it in bad shape. Ended up just using the bottom end after replacing the pistons and reusing his old head.

Yeah this is the roulette of JDM's. I would have tried to return it. I was super happy when I pulled the covers and pan and found no varnish or sludge. They all say 70k-ish on these but really who knows.

As others have said, and I said in your other thread, you're going to leave a lot of money on the table by selling it non-op with no motor.

I personally would pay maybe $4k tops considering all the other upgrades. Meanwhile I'd bet you could fetch close to $15k for it, if it had a running motor in it. Leaving $11k on the table over the emotions involved isn't a good idea IMO.

Another real savings was bonus replacement peripherals parts from jdm. I got truck at almost 255k.

The previous owner did crappy maintenance on it. So I got the refresh on the injectors, alternator, power steering pump and multiple other items for project. All toyota factory products that came with the jdm engine in great condition.

IMO it’s a 3-4k truck no engine. Someone is always looking for a project truck.Only put another engine if you’re gonna keep it. If you go through to time and money on a new one, first add up all the money you’ll be out including the first few mess ups, no reason to do a new engine to sell and only break even imo.

Car-part.com look for a salvage yard that has full trucks you can pull the engine from thats been in a wreck. I’d never rebuild one of these unless there are no used or JDM engines left. Did you get your engine back from Yota1? JDM swap helps to have a North American engine’s brackets / oil cooler, etc.

I didnt but I have all the brackets. The only thing I'll be missing is the oil pickup tube. I had them send me my valve covers and oil pan.

Yeah I don't know what you have in your area, but if you can get a borescope on Amazon and look through the spark plug holes and get a compression or leak down check, anything under 200k miles should be good (since it sounds like this is a recreational occassional use truck that won't pile on miles quickly at all).
