Apologies, turbo lag isn’t the topic here.

Let’s say it’s 3 seconds, or even how long does it take to go 1/4 to 1/2 miles? It’s certainly something I’ve experienced enough to ask about. Comes down to using high boost pressure instead of just downshifting.

This is a screen grab from the 9 second video, it was 5 seconds to go from 61mph to 65mph with light acceleration and almost full boost and MAX gauge.

I’m also not saying it’s slow, again going back to the full boost at light acceleration.

Because it’s not downshifting…it’s building boost instead. Is this that hard of a concept?

Maybe you should change that boost gauge to another visual.

This thread smells of "analysis paralysis"

Change the gauge cluster settings to look at something else on that side, like the stereo or clock. Problem solved

The manufacturer's intention with all this available info is to allow the driver to monitor engine conditions and put their mind at ease. Sometimes it has the opposite effect

We see it all the time with guys that have OBD data on a screen like an app for their phone. They're driving through the mountains on a hot day watching coolant temp fluctuate up and down between 190 and 215 degrees, the factory temp gauge hasn't budged but they're convinced they have a problem

Great idea! I was actually going to challenge you guys to drive around with the boost gauge on and see if you have similar feedback.

lol I’m going to change it to tire pressure then freak out because one tire is 37 psi while the opposite is 34.

I have boost pressure on my main. But I actually like seeing how much it’s making at any given time.

Look up LSPI, Low-speed pre-ignition. Goes against the “build boost pressure instead of downshifting”

Drive your truck however you like. But you sound very paranoid about non-issues and may be better off in a 3rd gen Tacoma without a turbo.

Appreciate the inputs. Unfortunately I’m only buying new so I’m stuck with whatever they make.

You should send that video to the engineers at Toyota. They've probably never even heard of it, you'd be helping them out a lot

Ya’ll act like I’m crazy on this one! How is it that unreasonable to think that full boost at less than 2k rpms with the slightest pedal depression may not be a good thing? I guess time will tell if these engines hold up over time,

If this is the first iteration of turbo Tacoma, how does everybody know what the Toyota engineers intended? If anyone can find it, I can’t seem to dig up where Toyota says this engine should be at full boost at less than 2k RPM or performs that way. Contrary I also can’t find anything saying it shouldn’t be at full boost at low rpm other than LUGGING and LSPI.

I get it “shut up and drive the truck,” however other than saying “it’s supposed to do that,” nobody has any real evidence to make that case.

All feedback is much appreciated by the way.

    So a couple things

Twin scroll setups spool extremely fast, especially when you've got such an undersquare engine. Wind/hilly terrain will play a big roll in how much load you create, and thus how much boost is required to accelerate.

The throttle map is definitely not very linear

    Example:

    linear_throttle.jpg

You're probably giving it way more beans than you mean to.

And why are you worried about lugging your AUTOMATIC truck?

Instead of "why is this turbo so anxious", the the title of the thread should be "why is this owner so anxious"

The answer is youtube, that's why
