We have a 2012 tacoma prerunner v6 that has been having a problem overheating. Last week I decided check the spark plugs due to multiple codes, a few saying misfire on a specific location and one saying multiple misfire detected. So I noticed that only one spark plug was wet, it was the middle one on the passenger side. Anyways I left all spark plugs out and didn't go look at the truck for a few days. Pulled out my borescope and without needing to use it I could see coolant sitting in 5 out 6 chambers. I figure blown head gasket but im worried it might be a cracked head. Drained the oil and coolant came out with oil. But it wasn't milky which has me a bit confused.

If you have coolant in 5 out of 6 cylinders, keep in mind there are two separate cylinder heads. If it has had overheating problems then yeah head gaskets are a good possibility.

Could be both head gaskets blown, could be something else. Unfortunately no way for us to tell over the internet. Could start by getting a combustion leak detector test kit to help confirm diagnosis (though not perfect would be another data point). Good luck!

Milkshake is rare with Toyotas. Most HG leaks are internal coolant leak from the water passage into the cylinder slowly.

I haven't seen a cracked head yet. We don't machine them as it leads to issues with timing.

If you continue to overheat it, there will be issues.

Tech tip: If its overheating in traffic, crank the heat in the cabin, it helps cool the engine as a 2nd radiator.

It's funny you mention that, that was first thing I did was turn on the heater the moment I would start the truck.
One day I was going down they highway and the heater was blowing warm/hot, then I got stuck behind some idiot doing 40 in 55 zone. Then it started blowing cold air, waited for traffic to go by to go around him, hit about 65-70 and then hot air started coming back out.
My first thought was the thermostat, so when I got home I let the truck cool down, removed the thermostat, reassemble everything and took it for a test drive, got the same distance as the day before and had to pull over cause the temp gauge was rising

I replaced my thermostat thinking it had gone bad. No such luck, still ran hot. I need new head gaskets, but no shop around here will do just head gaskets. They want to rebuild the whole motor or replace it.

@Celeste323 can you post pictures of the steps to replace you head gaskets? If I don’t find anyone willing to replace mine, I may try it myself when things slow down and I have a covered area it do it in.
