Trying to figure out a mount...

Has anyone mounted this:

Is there enough room to place an aftermarket deck underneath it at all?

 

Why not buy a HU that has it all?

 

Not sure of price difference but here's a great GPS/DVD Multicenter that I installed a few weeks ago.

The Kenwood series of Garmin based GPS units will allow you to use some FREE non Garmin hi res topo maps, converted to Garmin format. You can install these to an SD card and use that as your map. It has an extensive and accurate trace back feature that will work with it as well... however; it will not let you dowload waypoints and trails to the map. Once its done... it is done. You use the map as provided with no overalays or you use the Garmin provided street maps. You can manually input any desition or destinations from the head unit but you cant download a path with say 50 waypoints easily. For road use and limited offroad use its awesome... if you need more serious offroad use, its not the ticket at this point.

The Clarion unit above is useless offroad. All other GPS units are on road use only as far as I know.

 

Ya I am trying to get the truck more off-road oriented and I think that a great GPS will really help me out. I think that it will allow me more freedom as wheeling goes because I will be able to find my way back and explore new trails with the confidence of not getting extremely lost.

 

In my experience, the countour maps are better than nothing offroad but are not that super useful. What IS super usefull are satallite imagery based maps. I was able to navigate out of some confusing trails by looking at them on my phone based Google maps when my Kenwood would not let me see these unmarked but easily seen trails that were NOT on a contour map.

I have decided that I NEED this capability. I am getting a hiking/handheld unit for this as my phone wont always have service and no handheld or any other GPS for that matter can compare to my in dash Garmin based Kenwood with 3D City maps, real time traffic, lane merge assist, etc. Garmin is releasing "Bridseye" software for handhelds that will allow this. Delorme also has Satallite imagery based maps.

 

just a suggestion but why do you use the space below the heater/ac controls in front of the shifter and make a mount and a surround for the lowrance gps it will be out of the way but i would test it first just in case being that low is 2 much interferance with the gps signal

 

There is not enough room for what you suggested sun. And it would not necessarily be the safest area to be looking as I am driving, if I needed to glance at it

 

Dang tat thing tat big well I dunno go all out custom and cut a hole in the top of dash and have it motorize out I'm jk I dunno bro
