    to use PSN, you must agree to TOS. I'm guessing the mods being done were violating the agreement, which most likely has some legal ramifications.

    The original hacks were from Anonymous in retaliation for sony picking on hackers. However, Anonymous claims not to be involved in the massive data theft which was what the second hack was. I tend to believe them since they typically aren't involved in identity theft. that doesn't mean that a member of Anon wasn't involved, but i dont think it was Anonymous as a whole. it looks like it was two separate groups.

    they hacked sony because sony is a bully. people were buying PS3's then modifying them. not to do anything bad, but just to tweak the way they perform. They paid for them, so why not? But sony is saying they violated some law that says its illegal to reverse engineer an OS (which Geohot did on the PS3) and sued the balls off of a very unfortunate young hacker. So even though this guy wasn't hurting anyone, Sony didn't like him playing in their lines of code and sued him. thats what prompted the original attacks. personally, i have no problem with Anon messing with Sony, but they need to do it in ways that doesn't screw over the innocent customers.

    its the same as when someone jailbreaks an iphone or roots an android phone, or mods their macbook to run Linux. But Sony took their which hunt a little too far and pissed off a group of people they should have steered clear of.

    cant remember the name of the law, but there is basically a law that prohibits backwards engineering of an OS. it happens all the time, and companies dont like it, but Sony took it too far. I dont know all the details but thats what i've been able to gather.
