Im new to the site and was wondering if anyone had experience with purchasing a cap/rack (Ive never done it) for their tacoma truck. I have a 2006 Tacoma with under 35k and in good shape (standard bed, white, no frills, just the basics)

The cap and rack would be used for: handyman carpentry, canoeing, biking, and sleeping in...

Any and all thoughts would be appreciated:

    aluminum vs fiberglass?
    leer vs others?
    whats a good deal?
    etc

    Thanks!

I got the Leer RCC commercial cap and ProRack , it is a reinforced cap rated to carry 400 lbs .

I am very happy with it .

Check this link out. Lots of different brands and installs. Leer and ARE are good brands and you can get them out here.

Look around on Leer's and ARE's websites for styles and options that you like and contact a local dealer like capworld to get a price new. You can build one on ARE's website and request an e-mailed quote on the cap you want with all the options you want. That will at least give you a baseline price for a brand new cap. Keep your eye on Craigslist and here for deals and people selling theirs used. I bought mine on here from a member in NY. Mine's an ARE MX Series, no rack, fiberglass, carpeted interior with the dome light. I like the mid-rise because of the extra head room inside. If you plan on building a platform using the notches in the bed or any sort of camping, the mid-rise caps are nice. I'm not sure of the benefits of aluminum vs. fiberglass.

New, they typically start around $1,000 and the sky is the limit depending on options. For a decent cap with a rack, plan on spending in the neighborhood of $1,500 new.
