Me and my father were looking at them for my mother for Christmas last year and ultimately got her the Kindle. After much research and talking to different people I am sold on the Kindle. I don't have any experience with the others and from what I've seen, don't care to. My mom loves it and she is one that will not touch any electronics, except for the TV. It is so simple to use. The big factor is the books available since you use Amazon.

You can read Kindle books on a rooted Nook. Amazon has an Android app for Kindle. The Color Nook is actually an Android OS so rooting it would give you access to all the Android apps.

The guys on XDA Developers have just about everything you can do to a Nook:

I have been using the kindle app on my xoom to reread the HHGG and have rather enjoyed so far. it is fine for the occasional reader but I can't imagine the regular LCD screen would be good for an avid reader. E-Paper is the way to go if you read a lot.
