Question for Camper Shell owners.

I've spent the last 2 hours searching so if this has already been answered I apologize in adv.

I'm trying to make up my mind between a Camper Shell (Leer 100 XR) and the Leer 700 tonneau cover.

What my question is, I'm coming from a 4Runner and when cross winds picked up driving down the road I got pushed around really bad. So my question is if I put a Camper Shell on it, how bad are they in cross winds?

 

I've got an ARE cap, and haven't noticed much of an increase in crosswinds over the DC before I put on the cap.

 

I also have an ARE and haven't noticed much of a difference.

 

I have a Leer 100RCC , haven't noticed any difference

Thought of another question, with the glass locked and closed can the tailgate still be opened, or would I need to have one of the pop-lock things installed?

 

With my ARE topper the tailgate cannot be opened. Better yet should not be opened, if you do it will break a plastic lip that covers the tailgate. Not impossible to do for a crook but not an easy mistake to make in daily activities.

 

no real difference. I came from a 4runner as well. if anything, the truck is more planted.

 

I have a Leer 100XL and I notice the wind only slightly more. It's a negligible factor in deciding between a shell and a tonneau cover.

As for the tailgate. Yes it can be opened with sufficient force. But think of it this way:
"A lock will only stop an honest thief.|

 

Yeah I noticed my shell caught more wind, but with a DC it's got a big profile anyway. As for getting into one, it's not hard to break into one and if a thief really wants in, he'll figure out a way almost no matter what you do.

 

Before I had an 86 4Runner, and in a stiff crosswind, I got blown all over the place. Now I have a Leer 100XR on the Taco, and in even the heaviest winds, she's rock solid. Honestly getting blown all around by wind has a lot more to do with suspension & body roll than anything. Drop the Leer on that truck .. you'll love it. If you ever think you might add a rack in the future, get the Thule rack rails installed too. That way it's covered by the factory lifetime warranty against leaks & then you can add the actual rack at your convenience.
