painting peeling rims

my 06 trd rims are f'd. i'm doing the ol' black paint job on them. i will have to remove the paint bubbling areas which will leave and uneven surface. should i try and remove all the factory paint or spray an ass load of paint on them? i want them to look even. if i need to remove it all whats the best way? i can't de-tire them and have them blasted unfortunately.

 

The only way you're going to get a good result is stripping the old paint. If you can't blast them, you will have to sand the crap out of them. I'd start by pulling the weights (mark the spots!) with 60 until it's all off, then maybe smooth them out with 240. No use in going higher, wheel paint is thick. Few coats of primer, then a few coats of paint. Follow the directions on the can, you should get a good result.

 

Yes definitely sand the crap out of your wheels. You need to get to the bare metal. You will thank yourself every day in years to come. Make sure you prime them, and maybe right before priming rub the wheels off with acetone.

 

im currently plasti dipping my rims..too bad i can only do 1 rim at a time

 

i figured i'd have to go bare metal. not fun. i wonder if i could wire wheel them with my die grinder.

 

Are you just going to rattle can them? If so, they wont last very long. Prep is the key, but be prepared to constantly touch up your wheels if you dont powdercoat them.

 

do you have a picture of your plasti dipped rims? do they look good? i feel like it would come off constantly
