I still like the truck built in India. Everyone bashed it but it is a solid vehicle. Kind of reminds me of the Suzuki Samurai. (did I spell that wright, right, correctly, or the way they do in Canada?)

VW made (not sure they still do)/makes a Jetta looking truck with a TDI diesel pretty neat pickup getting 40+ mpg. I have a Jetta TDI and never get less then 50 mpg.

If Toyota ever brings a new diesel stateside, it would probably go into the Tundra first... Don't get your hopes up.

I think one of the biggest reasons people get the Taco over the Frontier, Coloranyon, Ranger, etc. is the Taco's reliability:

Keep in mind this is a survey conducted in 2011 on owners of 2008 vehicles, so it includes the propeller shaft recalls and the silly gas pedal debacle.

VW's reliability for existing larger models is near the bottom of the barrel according to statistics:

The biggest issue is the north american emission standard for the diesels, VW did not import a diesel for a year until they meet the requirements for 50 states the same would hold true for Toyota and they probably don't think it is worth the effort not enough sales. Toyota etc. have had diesels in every thing for ever. Nissan tried a diesel, nice ride but it was not fast enough for the Americans. Part of this you can thank GM for they did nothing to help the public image of diesels.

They're in Mexico so at least one country in North America gets them. Went to Piedras Negras Mexico a few weeks ago and got to drive a forest green one. The top of the line luxury 4x4 model goes for around $35k in Mexico, which is about 2 grand more than the 4x4 frontier and Tacoma. It doesn't drive like a truck, more like a jetta or euro sedan responsive steering wheel feel. It can pull 6200 and payload is an impressive 2300 lbs.

The heavier top of the line 4x4 double cab model gets an advertised 36mpg hw and has, 4x4 low and high settings and rear locking dif. I would buy one today if it came to the USA, but it would be 2nd in line if I could also get the Hilux diesel. But the VW ain't bad with 300 lbs of torque at 1500rpms. I already emailed vw and toyota to complain about not being able to get one in the USA, I recommend everyone else hound them as well, maybe one day we can have one of these mid size diesel trucks. There's a bunch of Amarok off road videos on youtube from modded lifted ones to getting stuck in mud.
