Feb 2010 Drive Shaft Recall

I've bought my Tacoma new back in Jan 2010. All was well and good until 2 days ago when the drive shaft randomly fell off entirely on the interstate... I retrieved the shaft and threw it in the back of truck and called a wrecker to bring it to the closest service center. Later that night I became curious and after a quick Google search discovered this:

The exact same problem described in this recall notice happened to me. I never directly received notice from Toyota regarding the recall. A VIN check does not pull up this particular recall, and Toyota says they cannot give me more details without the "recall number", which does not seem to be readily available. Particularly, I'm looking for the affected VIN range and/or production dates of the affected trucks. My theory is that I simply fell through the cracks and my truck was only on the lot a matter of weeks before I purchased it, and was told by the salesman that they were trying to push trucks out the door at the time.

Has this happened to anyone else? And any ideas how to continue my research?

Thanks for the info. Obviously 4 wheel drive was not engaged at the time. I'm just trying to cover all the bases so I don't end up paying out of pocket for something that someone else might be liable for.

 

Are you still under warranty? I believe drivetrain is 70k.

 

I could be wrong, but I thought that voluntary recall only applied to a small set of 4x4 V6 models. As a side note, what's interesting is that Dana sold this same driveshaft to several other car companies including Ford and Nissan. Both declined to do voluntary recalls, determing the potential for problem to be miniscule. But Toyota at the time was mired in controversy and decided to be extra cautious.

As for you OP - so sorry to hear that. Not what you want to see on a year old truck! That's just horrible. And good god yes that should be included on your warranty. That's just pitiful!

 

Thanks for the help y'all. Warranty was to 60k, I'm at 62k so out of luck. Looks like it should be fixed and back on the road by the end of the day tomorrow. It's just frustrating... great truck all around and I'll probably always buy Toyota, but this simply shouldn't happen.
