Look for signs of oil around the compressor hose connections. If you originally had only a bad compressor, and it was replaced, you should not have a leak now where none existed before. I would bet that whoever changed the compressor damaged a seal somewhere.

I have seen this at work, I do appliance repairs for a living. Compressor goes bad, all of a sudden there is a leak after the compressor is replaced. Someone tops off the refrigerant and hits the road instead of finding the leak. It's always right at the compressor where they missed a solder joint.

No solder on our trucks, but same concept. It's almost always the last thing that was messed with.

Compressors go bad because of the freon level, either low on freon
And u won't get cooling back to the compressor so they over heat and burn out or over charged and the compressor pumps liquid and breaks. Also only compressor oil and freon is supposed to be in your AC system. Air or moisture is a big no no

So took the truck in again today. Apparently the used compressor he put in originally is leaking. the owner of the dealer I bought the truck from was out of town today, so before the mechanic does anything, he's just waiting for him to get back. So I should be getting another compressor. hopefully that fixes it.

Sorry, I'm late getting in on this. FWIW, my '05 started blowing warm air out the passenger side while cold air was still blowing on the driver's side vents. I thought it was probably a bad blend door mechanism, so I took it to the dealership & they diagnosed leaking condenser. Apparently, this is how it goes when 134 is leaking slowly: the passenger side goes first & then the driver's side. By the way, they only wanted $1465 to replace the condenser, etc. I took it to a local garage, where they evacuated all the refrigerant & then refilled it with new juice and a can of 134 Stop Leak for only 142.00. This was 4 weeks ago & the a/c is still chillin' cold after a week of 95+ highs. Hope this helps.

Is it normal to have a very quiet hissing sound right behind the dash? From reading on the net, I figure it's just the expansion valve. just want to make sure.

Yup it's just trying to equalize the pressures

Stop leak is a band-aid, the problem will only return. The other problem with stop-leak is that no one will work on your ac anymore. Stop leak messes up r134a recovery equipment.
r-134a is Suva. R-12 is Freon:)
R-12 compressors fail beacuse the oil would leak out before the Freon did. R-134a compressors usually fail because of age related failure. Suva is smaller than it's oil, so the leak/problem is caught before there is compressor damage.

The expansion valve is mounted on the firewall. It controls the flow of Suva to the evaporator. The line going to it should be cold and frosted when working properly, and should hiss. If the air from the vents is warm, but the lines are cold, you have an air door problem. If the line is warm, you have an ac problem that needs further troubleshooting.

No stop leak in the AC for me. dont trust the stuff. And I have pretty much ruled out an air door problem. the heat blows hot, and at the same temp from all vents. Just running the vent blows the air out the same temp from all vents. When the air works for the week after they recharge it, the air blows out cold from all vents. Once it leaks out the 134a, then it stops blowing cold.

Took matters into my own hands today regarding my AC not working on my truck.
Found a new ac compressor on Amazon.com for 277 with free shipping. All the auto parts stores wanted 550 for it If they could even get it. I think I'm going to have Harlem auto install it. I'm done messing with the current place. Doesn't seem compotent to me. Seems like he is just guessing as to what is wrong. And the guy who owns the place I bought the truck from kind of pissed me off today by basically sounding like I caused the problem.

cool. Well, when I take it to the shop, I will tell them I have these parts, but anything else they need they can just get however they normally do.

I thought a licensed shop is supposed to, when they find a leak, evacuate the system and tell you to fix it or they won't fill it. You can get the original R-134a back that they sucked out, but any make-up you have to buy.

according to section 609 of the Clean Air Act they do not have to fix the leak. http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/609/recharge.html#q3

never ask them to reuse old refrigerant. You do not know the quality of the last refrig in their recovery tank. Always get all new refrig. It's not that much for new refrig compared to wiping out another compressor.

Ahh... I see... most likely it was a state requirement that was being referenced. First guess would be California.

There is only one tank on an ac machine. It recovers the Suva from your car and adds it to the tank. There is not a separate tank for the new and old. A good shop has a tester and will make sure you have r-134a and no other refrigerants or junk in your system. This is why no one will work on your system with stop leak in it.
Refrigerant does not go bad. The oil in the system can break down, the components can break down, but use a recovery machine to save the Suva, and it can be reused. Suva is a gas at room temp.
I have a MACS(mobile ac service) certification. I won't speak to something I'm not sure of without informing you of it.
Take it to a reputable shop. They have the vac machine and sniffers to find leaks and bad compressors. You can do the replacement work yourself, but you'll still have to take it back in to get vaccuum'd and leak checked again.
