Broken Pinion Gear

    TRD supercharger w/ 2" pulley and 7th injector kit, 6" Fab-Tech lift, TRD cat-back exhaust, JBA headers,
    I got out of work and noticed a puddle of gear oil under the differential. Looking closer I noticed that I had a dent from the inside out with a hairline crack. I was able to drive it home. I disassembled the differential and found that the pinion gear was missing some teeth. It says TOY 529 TP (5.29 gear ratio). Before all of this, I had a axle shaft seal leak on the passenger rear wheel. I occasionally topped off with
    $30 Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear oil (I don't believe I let it ever got too low).

    Questions: Should I buy the same Toyota Pinion Gear? What other brands of ring and pinion gears do you recommend? Did the pinion gear teeth break off due to lack of oil, horsepower, driving habits?

    Driving habits: Daily driver, pulled cars long distances with tow dolly and tow bar, occasionally go mudding (2nd place Stock Class in the 38th Annual Canadian River Mud Bog)

    Description of vehicle: 2003 Tacoma 3.4L Double Cab SR5. It has a TRD supercharger (2" pulley, 7th injector kit, JBA headers and TRD cat-back exhaust). It also has a 6" lift with 35" tires.

    You probably already realize this, but just in case...

    Based on the info you've provided, it looks like you are a 4x4 so which ever brand of ring and pinion you go with, make sure it is the same ratio as your front diff.

    If it is a 5.29 (reasonable since you are running 35s), Toyota will not have that ratio. You'll have to go aftermarket. Others on here will have to make recommendations about which brands are best.

    Do you have the e-locker? If you do, you have an 8" ring gear. If not, its an 8.4".

    Yes, my Tacoma is a 4x4 and has a limited slip differential. I do have a push button by the steering wheel that locks the diff, so I'm assuming mine has an e-locker. I googled TOY 529 TP and it looks like it is Toyota. My concern is running into the same problem if I get the same ring and pinion gears from Toyota. I hope someone can recommend some stronger gears for me. Maybe Mobil 1 synthetic gear isn't that great or maybe it's not a high enough weight for my application.

    Yeah, maybe the 5.29's aren't Toyota. Googling it again pops up precision gears website.
