I wouldnt shoot it yet. ha funny thing i just went and showed my dad the post. hes a little of a gun nut, and we hunt 24/7, so our guns are our prizes. but with the leather strap, and the case it was in, leather attracts moisture, which is probably slim chance that anything happened to it, but going through the barrel, and cleaning and oiling would be a good idea. maybe even take it to a local gunsmith and just have him check it, im sure they would do it for free, especially if you dont know if he cleaned it after he used it or not. but yes, its a tack driver. regarding the 2" high at 100, that the best idea, or even dead on at 200. being 2 high at 100 is almost dead on at 200, but if sighted in at two you wont be to high at 100, and can still aim dead on maybe inch or two high at 300 and still be right in there. heres a pic of what my brother did, as he sorta made it his gun now....:mad::mad::mad:

EDIT: and for shooting it, it wont hurt the value, just take care of it and always clean and oil. youll be fine. and this stock was only around 200 i guess. ill find out more infor if you want, but theres plenty out there to save the stock if you want to use it.

    Good advice Grinch.

The night before last I broke it totally down including the bolt and trigger. There was just a little carbon on the back of the firing pin. I was amazed on how clean it actually was. I ran some Hoppes #9 through the barrel and next to nothing came out. I then ran some Sweets 7.6 to take care of any copper. Once again nothing on the patch. I used patches and nylon barrel brushes. I used a half can of gun scrubber spray to get rid of all oil and cleaner. I then reoiled everything with Rem Oil and hit it with compressed air the distribute and remove excess oil. It's as smooth as a baby's butt.

Yesterday when I took it to the gunsmith to mount my scope he and his assistant looked over the rifle and said it was as good as new. He scoped the inside of the barrel and said there was zero rust or wear. He told me that the barrel could even use a little more "breaking" in before I really sighted it tight.

As for sighting it here is my theory. Opposing position are welcome. I decided to use my Nikon ProStaff BDC 3x9x40mm scope that I took off my AR15 last year. The reticle has holdover circles for different distances. After much research I have chosen a 165 gr. round as my primary load for this gun. The speed of the bullet is about 2800 fps. The reticle matches that speed with 100 yards at center and then each circle at another 100 yards out. I've talked to many deer hunters and most shots in my neck of the woods are 100-200 yards. If I were using rounds traveling at about 3300+ fps I would match up with the reticle at 200 yards center. My coyote gun, a Remington VTR 22-250, cruises at about 4000 fps so my varmint scope is zeroed at 200 yards center.

According to the barrel codes you have a 700 built in 1960 (impossible) or one built in 1986.

ya. thats good. glad to hear its all up and good to go. guns a beauty. as for the scope with the BDC, if you still have the manual for it they specify what you should sight in at with different calibers, grains etc. example one of our bdc's, might be nikon... too lazy to go look, say to sight in at 200 for the 7 mag, and 100 for our 270. check that just to see, but other wise if your getting all close shots, why not go 100, or even two just incase. i would do two just incase, and know anything closer then that is dead. but as i said, its preference, opinions dont really matter cuz its you shooting the thing. whatever is more comfrotable and confident for you.

Agreed except I know it was early 60's. My grandpa's health wouldn't allow him to even go fishing with me in 1986, let alone shoot a 30-06. (He did sit out in his backyard and pick off rats at age 95 with his 1955 S&W K-22. He gave me that gun also.) All 3 of his daughters verified he bought the 30-06 in the 60's. Could Remington manufacture the barrel in 1960 but not sell it until 1962?

    I'm confused also.

very nice gun indeed! i just have one qusetion about the scope ur using. why do u choose a 3-9x40? everybody has personal preference but u get more range with higher variable scopes. say maybe like a 4-12x40, 4-12x50 or 6.5-20x50
