I have a new black Toyota key with a transponder. Is there any way I can program it myself? I've tried the two methods I found on the internet (pump gas pedal 6 times, pump brake pedal --- all windows up, open and close door 6 times, etc...). Neither of these methods worked for me. The dealership tells me to program a key for an 07 Tacoma, they have to do it with their computer for $42.50. Is this true? Is their computer the same computer i can borrow for free from any autoparts store to retrieve check engine light codes?

I have another key I made at Lowes (no transponder). In the olden days (5 years ago) didn't remote start installers tape an original key with a transponder under the dash in order to fool the car? I tried this but it seems the key has to be within half an inch of the key hole. I would like to be able to place an original key somewhere inside the truck so I can use my copied keys.

Any ideas or advice anyone? Thanks in advance!

Yes I am referring to a key with a chip in it. I called the dealership and they said they HAVE to program it (it is the only way). They charge $45.

I couldn't bypass it by sticking a factory key under the dash, it has to be within 1 inch of the of the ignition hole (on my truck).

i have an 07 to and if what ur sayin is true then the doors will lock if the keys are layin on the seat then if it has to be that close to it, they do have a diag tool like auto shops, but they have a flasher and a battery regulator too, because the batt has to be set to a certain voltage just to make it go into flash mode. u can do the remote urself. toyota just has the keys and programming for them on lockdown, but try all ur local locksmiths. they may have the toyota software. some do and some dont.

here is some stuff about our trucks programming, i have learned that maybe the ecu has to be programmed to the transponder computer and that to the keys. or something like that. using all this of course im sure.

If you look at the schematics for the defeaters, the key is placed in a box, something in the box transmits the signal along a wire-that wire is wrapped around the ignition key coil. I'm searching for a device which will read the key, store the data in the box(so that a key doesn't remain in the box), and the wire then transmits the data up to the reciever-which is located very close to the ignition key switch.

here is how to program a key if u already have one key working. The SST mentioned is a simple jumper wire.

    PERFORM REGISTRATION OF ADDITIONAL KEY
    (PROCEDURE "A")
    (a) Register an additional key by using the intelligent
    tester.
    HINT:
    • A maximum of 5 master key codes and 3 sub-key
    codes can be registered.
    • Registration mode will end if each step is not
    completed within the specified time.
    • When the ignition cylinder or the key cylinder set
is replaced, remove the transmitter module from
the original master key. Then install this
transmitter module to a new key and use the new
key as the master key. If necessary, use this
master key to register other keys.
    NOTICE:
When the ignition key cylinder has been
replaced, locking and unlocking doors is
possible with the new master key's transmitter
module (taken from the original master key).
However, the new master key will not be able to
lock and unlock doors through the door key
cylinder. Keep the original master key. If the new
master key's transmitter module's battery fails,
the original master key can be used to lock and
unlock doors through the door key cylinder.
    Additional Registration
    Procedure Time
(Completion of operation) Security indicator Condition
    1. Start
    - The indicator will blink until the first key is
    inserted.
    2. Insert the already registered master key in
the ignition key cylinder and turn the ignition
    switch on.
    3. Intelligent tester operation:
    (1) Select IMMOBILISER.
    (2) Select ID UTILITY.
    (3) Select TRANS CODE REG.
    HINT:
    After completing the above operation,
proceed to the next step in accordance with
the prompts on the tester screen.
    Within 120 seconds OFF
    4. Remove the master key. Within 20 seconds of the instruction on the
    tester.
    ON
    5. Insert the key to be registered in the
ignition key cylinder. Within 10 seconds
    6. After 60 sec. the key is registered.
    HINT:
    Security indicator goes off. -
    Blinking
    7. Next OFF
    8. End
    ENGINE IMMOBILISER
    – ENGINE IMMOBILISER SYSTEM EI–11

    EI
    HINT:
    • A brief outline of the procedures for key code
registration is shown on this page. For more
detailed information, please refer to the intelligent
    tester screen's instructions.
    • When the immobiliser system is operating
normally and the key is pulled out, the security
    indicator blinks continuously.
    • If the key code registration has failed in
automatic key code registration mode, code 2-1
will be output from the security indicator. Trying
to re-register an already registered key will cause
code 2-2 to be output when the key is inserted. If
the number of registered key codes exceeds the
limit, code 2-3 will be output from the security
indicator. The output details are shown in step 2
    (new registration).
    4. ERASURE OF KEY CODE (PROCEDURE "D")
    (a) Erase key codes using the intelligent tester.
    HINT:
    • All key codes are erased except for the master
key, which is used for erasing the key codes. In
order to use a key whose code has been erased,
a new key code must be registered.
    • Registration will be cancelled if each step is not
    completed within the specified time.
    • Conduct this operation with the driver door
    closed.
    Erasing Key Code
    HINT:
    • A brief outline of procedures for key code
erasure is shown on this page. For more detailed
information, please refer to the intelligent tester
    screen's instructions.

    • The ECU COMMUNICATION ID should be
registered when the transponder key ECU
assembly and/or the ECM is replaced in order to
    match these ECM COMMUNICATION ID
    • The engine cannot be started unless the ECM
    COMMUNICATION ID matches.
    (a) Register the ECU communication ID
    (1) Before operation, make sure that no key is in
    the ignition key cylinder.
    (2) Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of
    the DLC3. SST 09843-18040

engine) and leave it as is for 30 minutes.
    (5) Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect
    terminals TC and CG.
    (6) Check that the engine starts.
    HINT:
After the engine has been started, delete DTC
    2799 (indicating immobiliser communication
failures in the ECM) by following either one of
the operations below with the ignition switch

The Toyota Electronic Control Module does not have programming modes without a pre-programmed key.
If there is no key available that is already programmed into the module, the module must be replaced.

To delete all but one key from the unit:

Type E 1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
    2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
    3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal six times.
    4. Within 10 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the accelerator pedal seven times.
    5. The security light will flash, indication all keys other than the one being used have been deleted.
    6. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder within ten seconds. It will be the only key still programmed to work

    Add Duplicate Key:

    1. Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
    2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Do not turn the key from the OFF (LOCK) position.
    3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times.
    4. Within 20 seconds of completing the above step, depress and release the brake pedal six times and
    remove the key.
    5. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key into the ignition.
    6. Within 10 seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal one time.
    7. After 80 seconds the new key is registered and the security light will go off.
    8. Remove new key and depress and release the brake pedal 1 time.
