How does the tester determine there's no 'junk' in the system? I bought both my cars used and I wouldn't know to tell 'em if someone else put a stop-leak in it.

But it does make sense: I don't think it should be that hard for a machine to make the gas fairly pure in the shop. Since what your talking about turning a liquid to a gas, it's just like refining or distilling: compress the gas till it's a liquid then heat it JUST until the fractions you want gas off. Everything else stays liquid and is pumped away. Since your always working within the phase-change range of the refrigerant, pressures and techniques should be manageable.

    Interesting...

They have never had a drier apart then. The bag is dessicant, the other parts are the new seals.

They must be parts changers, not rebuilders.

Inside the drier. It has to be rebuildable if they offer replacement parts for it.

That is the last part you open and install, or the dessicant will absorb too much moisture from the air. Same can be said for a new, complete drier assembly.

Hmmm. I called them and they said that there seems to be a plug of some kind on the cylinder next to the condensor, but it has a cap over it that looks like it's soldered on. they said they didn't want to get into something like that that they have never done before. I think the fact that the cap appears soldered is something they have never seen before. He said I should be ok because they put the system under a vacuum for a period before recharging it so any moisture that might be in the system would be gone.

Fuck me. I hope they are right. this place came highly recommended by a good friend of mine who usually does his own work on his cars, but takes them to these guys for things he cant do like AC work.

EDIT. According to the parts department at my local dealership, the drier is replaced by replacing the entire condensor.

From looking at the diagrams on a few parts websites, the drier is inline. It's not in it's own can, like other vehicles. One website said it's attached to the condenser.

I know for sure that there are cans next to the compressor. They are mufflers and have not serviceable. They only function to muffle the compressor's noise.

    I'm still looking...

I am finding the same thing. Looks like in order to replace the part, you have to buy a whole new condenser.

I doubt they would do that. It has to be accessable, or else they wouldn't sell parts for it.
