Let me ask the Non Union guys one question.

How much is your employer paying into your retirement and benefits?

Before I went union I made okay money but as far as the benefits and retirement I got hosed and if I had it too do all over again I'd get my ass into a union from the very start.

A lot of the company owners that I have worked for in the past are all retired and living fat and happy off all the money I made for them over the years by busting my ass, I wish they had paid a few of those bucks into my retirement so I could do the same.

    Ha ha
I don't know where people get the idea that you can't fire Union members so you have to put up with lazy or worthless fucs, we send them down the road if they don't work out no problem.

I work in the printing industry as a Machine Operator and I've never been union. My employer is not union and never will be.

I honestly don't know what a union would do for me. I get paid well, so I can't complain. Yeah-it'd be nice to get paid more.....but why should I have to pay DUES to get it?

Funny, but we just had a meeting today about unions. They warned us that Union members are down and they're trying to trick people into signing on.....

In years past, some employees have banned together to try and get a union in-house but they never succeed (not enough interest).

I am a union steamfitter. We make decent pay, have health benefits, a very good pension, and an annuity(like a 401k). All of our training, all of the classes are free. You simply have to sign up for them. HVAC work is constantly changing and growing and it sure helps to keep on top of things. We have lazy no good people, the same as everyone else.

hmm so i can work non-union and do the kind of work i really like to do, quality-wise, but not make as much money and have no benefits (what is a 401k?) or pension. now if i go with a union i get a better pay, benefits and pension, but will not enjoy my work as it sounds.

i'm native so benefits coverage are not as important for me (and i also live in canada) since i have fairly decent coverages already. i'm too young to really think about a pension, which i know is damn important and should consider regardless of age. my biggest concern now i guess is that i may not be able to work at the rate that unionized guys do (my crew and the big cheese always tell me to take my time and do it right).

thanks for all the info everyone, i appreciate it!

It doesnt always work that way though. Usually in my experience its the biggest brown noser that gets the promotion. My union has its good and bad points. Mostly good though. Yeah they are money hungry but i make way more with them than without them. one more thing, sad as it may seem principals dont always pay the bills.

i def'n understand the whole brown nosing thing, our project manager is a complete idiot but gets everything handed to him on a silver platter! the guy is paid to manager sites but all he does is make us do his job! he gets the company truck, company credit card for gas (which he uses for food and to take his various girl friends out with, including strip joints), they pay his insurance, and buy all his tools! he makes way too much money for a guy who does absolutely nothing! not too mention he has no idea how to run a site, or to do any of the work! grrr he pisses me off
