    Do any of you guys have any recommendations on front and rear differrential lubricant? Thinking of changing mine on an 07 and just looking for advice on brand and viscosity. I normally use synthetic just wondering if the extra cost is worth it.

    not sure about the front as I own a prerunner...but the rear is 75-90 weight...3 qts...I prefer synthetic myself

    Synthetic is good, allows the diff to run hotter.

    My 09 Prerunner manual states-
    Rear diff 75-85 GL-5, (3.12qts)
    Manual Trans 75-90 GL-4 or GL-5 (2.7 qts)

    I know alot of guys use the same weight across the board, but this is what the manual states. Was the 08 different?

    Also, the LSD additive is only required on truck's equipped with a mechanical LSD, installed on our trucks thru the 08 model- but 09's and above do not need it.

    I keep a five gallon bucket of gear lube in the shop...This current bucket is from Auto Zone, but it meets the GL-5 spec.

    Borla Catback Exhaust, Snorkel, 33s on either 16's or 18's, ARB Bumper, All Pro LT w/Walker Evan Shocks front and back, All Pro expedition leaf pack, 10,000lb Superwinch, Intake Manifold Spacer, Bed Rack with ARB RTT, Rotopack and Hi Lift mounted, Husky Liner mats and an air freshener from 1995.
    If you have a sport with a mechanical LSD, don't buy synthetic. Get regular dino gear oil for it AND put in an LSD additive IF the oil you buy doesn't already come with it. Some do, some don't. Have a look at the brand and see what it says.

    If you don't have an LSD and you purchase oil (Synthetic or Dino, doesn't matter) and it has LSD additive in it, don't worry. It's fine to use in your diff that doesn't have an LSD in it.

    My 07 TRD Sport needed to use reg 80w-90 with tube of modifier.

    I originally had Royal Purple 75w-90 with a tube of modifier from NAPA and I was getting a growling sound coming from the rear in the morning when I pulled out of my parking spot.

    So I drained it again and used Valvo-Line 80w-90 and a tube of Motorcraft modifier I got from a Ford dealership and it's been silent and fine for the past ~15K miles.

    Here is a link to some tests for gear oil if you want to look. Page 19 shows how all the oils rated on all the different test, with a red mark for "fail".

    It comes to mind that if any oils beat Amsoil that they probably wouldn't be included in these test and if any tests made Amsoil look bad those tests wouldn't be included here either.

    Some oils beat Amsoil in some of the tests but over all Amsoil wins. Of course, it's their tests. The one Castrol had no red marks also.
    I doubt that a lot of the tests mean much to an everyday driver.

    I don't think I would get Royal Purple Max-Gear 75w-90 after looking at page 6 though. Maybe there are other oils they put out that are better? This test is 5 years old too so I don't know how valid it is.

    I don't think I'm going to take the time to try and figure the test out. I had already made up my mind to go with Amsoil anyway, just checking around.

    behind my shop is a collection of empty five gallon gear oil buckets, and I liked the valvoline product the best.

    On the other hand, I have never failed a gear box that I kept clean oil in...

    I called in my Vin (07 Taco) to Toyota to see if I had a TRD because I saw the LSD sticker on dif. She said I didn't have a TRD. Go figure. According to her, by the time I got off the phone w/ her I still am not clear what a real TRD is. I think you would have to order a complete TRD to get every package or option that is sold or whatever dealer has on lot. One might come with Catback and rear disc (which only come w/ complete rear end) and the next w/ different shocks and on and on and on. I'm probably getting out of my league here and I'm sure I'll hear about it.
