Due to recall on the frame and ever dealerships ignorance i replaced my frame and everything under the box myself
While working for a fracking company I was making decent money and decided I had to buy a truck when I got home. Naturally I chose a Tacoma and of all the options I had I wanted to pay respect to the 1st gens and bought myself a 1997 xcab. I fell in love at first sight. Put new tires on her and away we went. We were inseperable. Then a month later I realized my frame was rusted out and it snapped :(:(:( so for the past 5 months ive been rebuilding her from top to bottom and ended up replacing the frame and everything under the box. i just finished her tn!!! i expect to be teary eyed when we reunite when I get out of work.:goingcrazy:

I am pretty sure there is a TSB for rusted out frames. Toyota does it for free. I hope that you didnt pay out of pocket for it.

EDIT: just learned that that is only for 00-04. Sorry for being an idiot.

i got ahold of toyota and they said because i hadnt owned the truck for over a year i was not eligible, also they got in their record books and said the last owner already has it tested for the bad frame recall and it passed? somehow in 1 year the frame adopted 5 holes i could push a football through

Sounds like someone is feeding you some lines. I've not heard of this one year deal? If your frame snapped it obviously shouldn't have passed last year. I found the whole in my 98 one year after it had passed the frame test. Brought it to toyota, saw the guys in the shop hitting the frame....they were going to pass it as they didn't find the soft spots and holes. I had to go into the shop and show them where to hit it...it failed and they bought it back. Your truck should be a buy back as long as it falls withing the 15yr extended warranty. Hope some of this helps. Cheers.

well looks like i got shafted because it was my good friend working for the toyota dealership that i called and she personally told me that. but i ended up fixing it anyways and drove it today for the first time. rides perfect and seems to be holding up great. new frame, shocks, brackets, gas tank, leaf springs. i loved it so im glad i just sucked it up and fixed it. i was thinking about getting a newer one and keeping the 1st gen for a second but id end up driving it every day anyways :D
