No. I'm pretty sure I know how it works (applying the beaks on the loose end to trick the differential into thinking both wheels have traction and distributing power more evenly to both wheels). I haven't tried it. I don't like mud so i don't reckon I will ever end up stuck enough to need it. Plus I have the rear locker. If i'm ever THAT stuck I probably don't deserve to get out.

***yes David K did send me a link on ATRAC. I was more concerned with turning the traction control off.

Got to love the early fall snow. I found some snow on Bolam too. Just a skiff. Hardly enough for a snowball fight; and that was above 10,000ft.

The primary use of A-TRAC (for me at least) is in all the places I used to use a Rear Locker on, in my last two Tacomas... ie. STEEP, ROCKY, LOOSE surfaces... The A-TRAC is MORE traction than the rear lockers because it 'locks'* the front tires together as well as the rear. You can have A-TRAC active and use the rear locker at the same time... but I haven't seen a 'need' for the rear locker on since having A-TRAC. I did use the REAR Locker in the snow last February just to give it some use.

    * Tire rotation across the axle is matched with A-TRAC just the same as if it was 'locked'... The only difference is the system senses traction loss and frees up to facilitate turning... The locker does not.

If only one FRONT tire has traction of the 4, the A-TRAC will pull you free... and that alone makes it a golden feature.

Some day... you will actually do some hardcore 4 wheeling and use the thing when regular 4WD won't be enough... then you might appreciate it.

The whole idea is to smoothly and safely take the Tacoma anywhere... without having to race it, bang it up, spin the tires, damage it... full traction on all 4 tires.

see, to me, atrac is the "oh shit" button. like oh shit i'm in the ditch, oh shit that mud is deep, oh shit i'm stuck. It doesn't seem like hitting the breaks and the gas at the same time should be your go-to strategy off road. If you can't get where you are going in 4 low with the rear locked, chances are you shouldn't be going. But if you HAVE to, ATRAC.
Maybe I'm wrong. I just don't like acronyms.

I realize that it's not simply hitting the breaks, I'm not trying to belittle the system in any way, I'm stoked on it. I'm just saying I'll use my locker in most scenarios and keep the atrac as an ace up my sleeve.

I just realized that I've been saying breaks instead of brakes. Obviously I should stick to crunching numbers and leave the writing to the literate.

Does a drop-in K&n air filter count? It did give me the boost I needed to make it up the hill to my house in 6th gear @ 65+ before I put it in I had to shift into 5th. I'm considering getting the TRD CAI and Cat-back exhaust...maybe borla. Unfortunately the lift will have to wait, I COULD do a small lift for the time being, but ultimately I am planning on putting on a Camburg or Total Chaos long travel suspension, with a 3 or 4 link rear, I also read about something called the coil-over killer or something like that. With the fiber glass and wheels/tires, that will be about 12 grand. I think for now I will work on building up the engine so when I stick 35 inches of rubber on the truck I can still make it up the hill.
