97 New to me Baseline Maintenance Help

I recently bought a 1997 Tacoa w/ 88k 2wd, 5spd 2.4L Reg Cab for $4250 in SoCal, (it's always lived in SoCal and frame is perfect). It had a clean CarFax and a AAA Inspection at a local mechanic turned up only wear item replacement.

I bought the Haynes manual and am going through and doing all of the routine services to "Baseline" the vehicle.

So far:
New Belts
New Battery
New front shocks
Changed all oils w/ Mobil 1 Full Synth (Eng = 5w-30, Trans & Diff = 75w-90)

To Do: (Input on things in this list is MUCH appreciated)
lube chassis, dirveshaft, etc
replace air filter if necessary
replace spark plugs if necessary
radiator drain and flush
replace fuel filter
replace O2 sensor
replace hoses if necessary
replace tires (mild tire rot)
inspect steering components
inspect exhaust
inspect seat belt (where can I get a new seat belt assy, one is torn up?)
inspect PCV valve
inspect fuel system
inspect brakes (new front rotors & pads & adjust parking brake)
inspect clutch pedal
inspect valve clearance
inspect spark plug wires, distributor, rotor
inspect & repack front wheel bearings (probably replace)
inspect evaporative emission control sys
inspect EGR valve


So, my questions to you all would be is there anything that you would add or take away from this list and why?
Is there any way to know if my more expensive sensors are still good? (for all I know they could be originals or replaced 20k miles ago)

What can you tell me about inspecting and adjusting valve clearance? From reading over the Haynes Manual it doesn't seem terribly hard, just a little time consuming. I've read about people having to remove the camshaft to adjust the valves but Haynes doesn't mention this? Am I flirting with seriously screwing up my engine by doing this or am I fine so far as I follow directions and go slow?

Also, how nice of a micrometer do I need to measure the shims if I need to adjust them?

Will the cheap one be accurate enough or do I need the better one? Or do I need better than either one?

Also does anyone have any experience with this valve adjusting tool? What are you using?

Unless you're having engine trouble, don't mess with the valve clearances. Waste of time to fix something that ain't broke. Same goes for the wheel bearings, sure, pack em' wit grease, but why replace em' if they're fine? Take your truck in for an alignment check somewhere (free) and they will check the suspension before they do it. You can do this when you get new tires. Suspension to include ball joints, tie rods, and wheel bearings.

 

Inspect valve clearance is written in some Toyota maintenance booklets as "audible only". i.e. the mechanic listens to the engine and make adjustments only if the ticking sounds louder than usual.

And O2 sensor should be replaced only when it fails (when you get the check engine light).

 

To get the Toyota maintenance schedule specific to your year and model, go to toyotaownersonline.com and register (free). You need your VIN. You wil be able to get the owners manual, maint. sched., and possibly any dealer-performed maint. records and also recalls or TSBs.

I don't think your engine needs regular valve adjustment. The 22RE 2.4 did every 15k miles.
