US Navy's new hypersonic railgun

The U.S. Navy may be well on its way toward obtaining a breakthrough weapon that can hit enemy targets located hundreds of miles away in less time than it takes to heat up a microwave dinner.

Defense firm General Atomics’ has recently released a video that demonstrates the long-range destructive capabilities of a high-speed railgun prototype known as the “Blitzer.” During tests, rounds fired from the gun blasted right through a 1/8-inch thick steel plate located 100 meters downrange and continued to travel more than four miles at mach five speed. In layman’s terms, that’s about 4,000 miles an hour at zero elevation.

I've seen some articles about that gun before but this is the first I've seen it shooting a projectile instead of a slug. The X25 you posted was cool as hell but this thing is ridiculous. Gotta love the US of A.

 

I can Niether confirm nor deny that this may or may not be located at the Navy Base Dahlgren, VA.

I was stationed there. There is some pretty amazing stuff in the works there.

0 degree elevation and 4 miles down range?! Holy shit!! This has no lift, which means if you hold a marble at the same height as the gun, drop the marble and shoot the gun at the same time, the projectile travels 4 miles before the marble you just dropped hits the ground

Can take people like DHK and kingfrog, put them in a magnetic capsule, and launch them to the moon with this?
