    MAC - a computer with training wheels - kind of like the government spreading the wealth ( Having no control, others making your decisions for you )

    PC – with windows 7 – some freedom, still have to go through loop holes ( like a college student with strict parents )

    PC – running Linux – all the freedom you want – like beingan adult

    Personaly I would do a dell-alienware and set up dual boot with Linux and windows 7, you get what you pay for, I still have my dell XPS after 6 years of abuse!!

    I'm on a PC at work and hate it. At home I have a first-gen black Macbook that runs like a top after hitting the 5 year old mark back in May - only thing I've had to "fix" was the purchase of a new battery last year. For my desktop I've got a REFURBISHED 24" iMac that's 3 years old now running Lion and it's as fast, if not faster after Lion, as the day I brought it home. Both purchased at University of Nebraska computer store with student discounts. $1200 for the Macbook and $999 for iMac.

    I appreciate everyones feedback and help. I think I may have landed on the hp dv6t... its a cheaper laptop, but will do everything I need it to. I have my powerhouse desktop for all of my other needs... it has a blu ray player and some pretty decent performance numbers, and I found one for a bangin deal

    I've worked on many Macs with multiple crashing/freezing problems. Same goes for PCs, but to me the PC is so much more enjoyable to use. Go with what you like, but don't believe the hype that Macs are trouble free dream machines.

    ^ This is so true!!

    Get a Mac, you'll be able to find all the programs for it and it'll last your lifetime. You can also Dual boot, meaning you can run Windows on your Mac which will help you share files, eetc. with your desktop as well as find programs.

    I bought a powerbook when they first came out in 2000, I still have it and use it daily. It's better than half the laptops you can buy today.

    EDIT: If you do buy a PC go for a HP or DELL they use the best hardware in their comps vs. Acer, Toshiba, etc.

    I think that one of the very key issues to consider is that apple makes PCs. There is no distinction on the basis of "mac vs pc" since mac ***IS*** a pc.

    "pc" does NOT mean microsoft.

    In choosing your SOFTWARE platform, the things to note are as follows;
    MS: Weak OS, acceptable interface.
    Apple: Weak INTERFACE, strong OS.

    My suggestion is to buy generic hardware WITHOUT an operating system, and install Linux. Pick your favorite distribution, the two biggest ones are Fedora and Ubuntu. This way you'll get a STRONG OS with a STRONG INTERFACE.

    As far as hardware goes, I suggest going with something that includes an AMD graphics card (formerly ATI). Avoid NVIDIA, they refuse to publish hardware documentation, so you end up limited to their whim as far as software support. Second to AMD graphics, go with INTEL graphics. These are MUCH WEAKER, but well supported. The CPU itself doesn't much matter. I'm partial to AMD CPUs as a way to support the underdog.

    Note: Linux is **FREE**, but this does NOT imply that there is less into it, the economics that support the development are just different, and NOT out of your pocket.
