From an IT Business perspective -- which may not bode well with all -- I've got a Lenovo W510 and it works exceedingly well. I've had it for over a year with absolutely no complaints. I have a tendency to lean towards the business-friendly laptops, since you'll pay a bit more for a better quality deal. Gateway, Toshiba, Acer, etc... are generally 1-year laptops. Keep 'em a year, toss 'em in the trash.

Anything from Sony generally holds up pretty well, but you'll pay $$$!

Thanks for the replies so far. Yeah sorry I should have mentioned long bartery life and decent portability are important too. I would love a 15" macbook pro but man the sticker shock is intense.

    .

For me ... Mac for sure ... a small learning curve the first week you use a Mac, and they are so logical to use.

And I like the hardware & the software coming from the same company if you have a problem.

yeah thats pretty convincing. I guess i figured i'd give the PCs a chance before completely ruling them out. A friend of mine told me to go PC because the price is so much lower and he said if you know how to do it, you can get all the big name software for free. But my dad and my step-moms PC just went out, and my GFs seems like its on its last leg....
