Just did the 5000 mile oil change . . . I used the last Fram filter I had and Castrol GTX 5W-30. I recently bought (4) oil filters (p/n 90915-YZZD3) from the dealer for $4.25 ea (with a coupon the dealer mailed me) and will use those from now on. I used to use Valvoline in all my vehicles but changed to Castrol in the 90's after seeing actual photos after 60,000 miles of the valve train of the Yamaha engines in Taurus SHO's on Pennzoil, Valvoline, and Castrol conventional oil.

Forgot to add . . . I've been doing oil changes for so long at 3,000 miles that I'm not going to change to the 5,000 mile schedule recommended by Toyota.

I looked on Ebay, too, and found this deal: $37 shipped for a box of 10. I'm not sure what shipping was w/ your guy (b/c it was easier to just buy on ebay than call and find out, and I'm lazy), but I think $3.70/ea is a good deal.

    Here's the Ebay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130207531385&rd=1

I don't remember how much shipping was either. I bought 10 Tacoma filters and 10 Avalon filters at the same time. So the shipping was all combined.

I see a variety of oil weights being used....

I am on the Gulf coast and really never see but maybe 1 freezing night per yr. Other than that, it's really hot in South Louisiana.

I bought the 5W-30 Castrol Syntec but have not put it in yet.

Also the owners manual is calling for 5.2 quarts if I change the filter with the oil. Am I reading that correctly? (engine is V6 4.0L - 1GR-FE)

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
I have 20,000 on it and I just changed to Mobil 1 5-30 at 16K , I plan on running the oil to about 6-7 thousand, depending on the color and the amount used. Basically, I use less than a half qt between changes.
I like to do it my self so I may work it so that I change over sometime in late Sept or Nov. just before it gets cold. That will take me thru winter.

I too, hate that maint light, just another way for Toyota to make money, by reminding you to get it changed.

JWWPHOTO, yes you are correct , its 5.2 or 5.5, according to my friend , who is a mechanic by trade. I had them do an oil change , as I had bid on a free oil change at a silent auction and there remark was it drove them nuts, why didn't Toyota (and other manufacturerers either make it 5 or 6qts regardless?
I guess there are extreme conditions when you can change the weight of your oil, I noticed one Taco guy, used o-30 Mobil. My manual for my O6 calls for 5-30, (4.0) and it seems to work well.
My two good friends that have had many Taco's and usually run them 250K or more, have always used 5-30 dino oil, using Castrol. We all live in New England , and do have some extreme temp over the 4 seasons.

I was incorrect in previous post. I did buy 5W-40 and I changed it yesterday.

    Thanks Jeff for you comments.

Since I bought my 2015 new the manual recommends, 5w30 oil which I've been running since day one. Now I go to meineke today to get an oil change and they're trying to tell me, I have to use fully synthetic. Saying that's what you need and what's recommended in their database.

I told them I will take my business elsewhere. They wanted me to sign a waiver, to put 5w30 in so I accept any responsibility.

Toyota recommends 5w30 and I've been running that, since I bought my truck new.

I only use mobil 1 snyth EP version anymore, I used to be a longtime user of standard Mobil-1 snyth oil but its too noisy for me. The EP version quietens the engine considerably. The difference is very noticable. I will use mobil 1 filters, or napa gold, or K&N filters, which ever is available to me at oil change time. I do 10,000 mile change intervals.

I use Amsoil Full Syn 5W30 with a OEM filter once a year, that's about 6500 miles on my 2015 taco access cab v6

(Edited: I had confused 0w20 with the 4L).

But you change your oil more than once a year right? I understand you can go longer, with synthetic oils to 10k miles between oil changes. Different blends etc..

For now I'm staying with 5k miles and non synthetic 5w30 or every six months. At least until I hit higher mileage and then maybe, I might consider switching to synthetic.

At 120k miles the manual still recommends 5w30. My point to all of this: The shop was trying to convince me that I should be running synthetic, at 61k miles when that's not true at all. I've been running 5w30, since I bought the truck new.

They all brainless to the fact that either they thought I have the 2.7L that does use synthetic, were trying to rip me off, are clueless about the 4L taking 5w30 and or their database is incorrect.

Walmart SuperTech 10w30 (or 5w30 in the winter) + Motorcraft FL400S oil filter.

That's right, Walmart oil with a Ford filter - taken me through 150k miles so far. Oil has been changed every 5,000 miles since I bought it new.

you just said that you're sticking to non syn 0/20 OR 5/30? The 2015 manual clearly states that 0/20 is recommended for the 2.7L 4cyl and 5/30 for the 4.0L 6cyl. The manual also states, "Use Toyota approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity. Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil" and then goes on to show viscosity grades and and temp ranges for each engine. So if the oil you use meets the GF-5 spec, it should be fine to use.

If you use conventional oil, I think your 5k interval is reasonable. If you use a quality synthetic, 10k is not unreasonable since syn oil base stock stands up to time/temp better than conventional oil. Not all base stocks are equal, either.

For example, AmsOil uses a very good class IV base stock and then modifies it with viscosity modifiers and additives. Castrol Syntec uses (in N America at least) a class III base stock that is in huge part just mineral oil base stock. There was a big legal battle between Castrol and some other big oil company years ago over the fact that Castrol called its Syntec Oil "Synthetic". There are also some oils that are synthetic blends, which is another whole can of worms. Basically, synthetic oils will meet the performance of the GL or other rating for more miles and time, offer better temp range performance, etc. Use whatever meets the GL-5 rating and change as necessary. If you want to get a better idea of how the oil you are using is holding up in your engine you can send samples for analysis and companies like Blackstone can give you reports and feedback on if you should change it sooner or if the oil can offer good protection for longer OCIs. The oil analysis can also show warning signs of abnormal wear going on in your engine, but that is not what they are really intended to do.

BTW, there is so much info available on this subject if you care to search. Forums like TW are great sources for some info but they are also great sources for misinformation, opinions and just plain BS. Look for publications that have been around for a couple years or more, are from reputable sources and/or have been published in peer reviewed articles/journals.
