The police around here no longer do reports at accidents that do not involve injuries and do not assign blame. What they do is ticket whoever broke the law if one was found to be broken (this can be used in your defense if the other driver got a ticket).

This helped in a situation where this guy pulled out right in front of me from a side street and I rearended them because they failed to yield to oncoming traffic and I did not have enough time to slow down.

In your situation they should have ticketed the truck for making a illegal turn. BUT it is still your responsibility to maintain a safe distance.

I rear ended some minivan covered in dirt some years ago, the sun was shining on the back and you couldnt see the lights. I dont even know if she even hit them the van stopped dead in front of me(45mph) She rear-ended another car that slammed on the brakes to miss an idiot making a late turn. Police found it was each drivers own fault. Cant blame the abs for not "stopping" you. 2 tons is a lot of weight to stop in a hurry.

Could be worse. You could be driving a 4Runner, and it'll be 2.5 tons to stop with same sized front brakes. :p

This. I like DDing a Corolla mainly because it's super nimble.

I can't agree... I don't think it sucks at all. People tailgating me? that's what sucks.

Also, it's not only the control ABS gives: ABS will stop a lot shorter than a panic stop with wheels locked. Yes, it's true that a skilled driver modulating good, well balanced brakes can reliably beat ABS stopping distances but no matter how the average driver might like to think otherwise they aren't that skilled. Especially in a panic like OP was. And not many vehicles short of a BMW have brakes with feel and modulate that well (IMO because designers increasingly depend on ABS).

And Tacoma's are kinda special because, with big rear drums it is anything but balanced when light loaded. My rears are always locking and ABS kicking in even for moderate stops on bumpy pavement. If ABS didn't kick in on a heavy stop I'd be modulating and using a fraction of the power of the front brakes so stopping distance would be way, way long. If l let the rears lock (assuming no ABS) I'd spin out and be ass-front in no time. Pre-ABS Tacoma's had a load-sensing proportioning valve that would increase force to the rear brakes as the load increased, that's not there on Gen2's.

I've no doubt OP's impact could have been harder with damage a lot worse so in spite of what he may think he's fortunate for having ABS. I hope he maintains a good following distance in the future especially when carrying precious cargo.
