LT (light truck) vs. P (passenger) wheels

Is there a real difference in the tire between these to? can i put a P tire in a double cab tacoma? or is it LT for a reason? Help would be great cause there is a price difference

 

I've got P-rated on my double cab without any issues. I'm also heavier than most because I've got a shell and a bunch of tools. The difference is the number of plys it takes to make the tire. LT tires will be thicker than P rated tires which means they won't squat as easily with weight but also means LT tires are heavier than P rated. FWIW, I tow and haul frequently with my P-rated tires and they do not squat or feel squishy. The tires I'm running are Cooper AT3's.

 

Use caution going from LT to P. You have both load range and speed rating to worry about. (the LT have more plys on side wall if that sort of thing is important to you)

Mine came with P-rated (245/75/16), dunlops.

I replaced with LT C load range 245/75/16

I wanted the extra side wall and deeper tread from the LT version. I might have gone over kill but ride and mpg have not suffered. Note that i kept same size just went more aggressive tread and higher load. I am in a snowy part of the country and didn't want too wide of a tire in the snow.

 

Now would you go with A general grabber at2 (it will be going on a 17x8.5 wheel)or what other tire do you like that looks nice and agressive for not a bad price?
