    Nikon D5100. Spent some time with my friend's D70 and really like the UI of Nikon. Tried to pick up a Canon T2i and T3i before making the final decision, but by then I think I had spent too much time with a Nikon. The Nikon just feels at home in my hands.


    I'm pretty free from Friday on. It's hunting season so I'm usually around with a rifle (hopefully that doesn't bother too many on here). Saturday, Sunday, it all works for me. Butte's got some good hunting districts around it. :D

    That is a great entry level camera. My friend has one. He is making some amazing photographs with it. What lens/lenses did you pair with it?

    I've got the Nikkor DX AF-S 18-55 and 55-200. But I want to be able to get up to at least 300mm. I'm thinking the 28-300 would be a good all around lens, but it is a little heavy. But being a DSLR it has a smaller sensor size than a 35mm camera, making the effective focal length a little longer already. Just playing with it for now. Seems to be perfect for me. I'm no pro, it has the same CMOS as the D7100 minus a few features, but plenty for me to play around with. Considering what I was shooting before, this thing is like a Ferrari for a Dodge Neon owner.

    Sounds like a good combo for getting started. The 55-200 with the cropped sensor compares to a 300 mm on the long end if it were on a full sensor body or a film body. Personally, that is just about my limit for a hand held shot. My hands just aren't that steady anymore to do it justice. And I'm too lazy to use a tripod.

    I think the 18-55 is even more interesting. My personal favorite lens is a 10-22 wide angle. I really like the landscapes.

    I do want to play more with wide angle. I'd like a fish eye, but it seems difficult to justify since they're pretty limited on versatility. I'm impressed with just being able to go to 18mm. I think a good quality wide angle would be right up my alley. I'm with you, I spend more time with landscapes than with people so the bigger picture is always more inspiring.

    Verdict is up. I'm going hunting this weekend.

    If you guys are interested we could lay a little more concrete plans about going out and playing next weekend. I'm still up for tooling around in the hills, and by next week it will probably be in the snow. We could practice some recovery skills as well if we play in the snow.

    Help me do my Christmas shopping guys...we talked about getting radios this summer and personally would prefer just getting a hand held like this. I know they don't get the range as the built in units but I'm just trying to talk to the truck ahead or behind me! Thoughts? Suggestions?

    I definitely applaud the plan to get a CB. I am curious about the thought process for why that one? Price? Versatility? Don't have to mount it? Can carry it when hiking?

    I have no personal use experience with that type but I've known folks who do. Some have been satisfied, some not.

    Its also a handheld but also can be wired up with power from the truck AND and external antenna AND can just be a battery powered handheld!

    I Know it works, Jon told me his was a little screwy so i don't think it was mine that was the issue. Ill have an external antenna next time anyways..

    The only downside that I'm seeing to next weekend it that it is Cat/Griz - not sure how many of you guys are planning on attending that (I will be far far away from the craziness) but maybe Sunday?

    I would rather have a handheld unit because I want to be able to pack it away when I don't need it. And the thought of tearing my dash apart is less than appealing.

    I picked that particular model mainly because it had the additional antenna.

    That was another one that I was looking at...research will continue for now :cool:
