My Donners pass adventure

I live in the Sac area and went to Reno with my wife for V day. I take
I-80 over Donners pass to get to Reno. There was a winter storm over the weekend, but nothing that bad. They closed the pass then opened it with chain control. They set up check points to make sure you have ether chains on or 4wd. You have no idea how many idiots in BMWs and other
fu fu cars that try to go over the pass in these conditions that have no idea what they are doing. On dry roads it takes me about two hours to get to Reno. It took me 6 hours to get there on Fri not because of road conditions, but cause of stupid drivers. If it is icy out, you want to keep your momentum to make it up a hill right? No. All thiese people would slow down. It was bumper to bumper. I have 2wd. At the check point they thought I had 4wd, so they just let me through. I was fine till the stop and go traffic. I figured I would stop and put chains on since I was only doing 15 anyways. At a couple places there are guys on the side of the road that charge $30 to put chains on for people, and they always have a line of people! Then they pay $30 to get them taken off on the other side!
Anyways, I pull over and get one side on when like 4 people come up to me and ask for help. I told all of them as soon as I get mine on I would come and help them. I go to help this fam with an Izuzu trooper. The guy asks me if he has 4wd, what tires does he put the chains on. I told him he realy didn't need them, but if he was going to put them on he should put them on the front for steering. He then told me he wasn't going to use 4wd because traffic was moving to slow and he didn't want to hurt his 4wd. ??????? I said cool, and in my head I was like WTF? So he gets his chains out and they are like freaking semi chains. Im talking massive! I help him back up on them and we start to put them on his rear wheels. right away I could tell they were way to big for his tires. I told him how bad chains can mess your ride up if they come off. He told me he would just bunje them up realy good. At that point I told him good luck and left. If you have 4wd, why would you not use it and then put the wrong chains on!?! I then helped out this chick that had a Honda some thing. She had no idea what she was doing ether, but she was hot so it was ok. Made it to Reno, Had an awesome weekend, and came back. On the way back I was about two car back in the other lane from this BMW SUV thing. I saw all this black shit fly out of his wheel well. I thought it was just dirty snow, but didn't really look like it. I got closer and started to hear a horible noise. NANANANANANANAN. Kind of like when your chains are only half way on and beating the crap out of your wheel well. More black shit flys out. I get next to this guy ans his wheel well is like F%$^&*% gone! I could see the whole side of his eng! I try to wave and honk at him, but he just keeps on going. WTF!?!?!?! How could you not hear and feel that!?!?! Ont the way back to Sac They though I had 4wd again. Never had to stop and put chains on. I have not lived in the country for about 8 years now, but god damn I hate city people.

 

Man. Sounds like my trip to Reno about 2 months ago. I too have a little 2Wd taco and I had loaded it up with sand bags and had my chains. I pulled over about halfway up the mountain since it was snowing like crazy and put on my chains. There was a guy there in a brand-new Corvette. No chains, and he was too scared to go back down. Luckily someone else pulled over to put on chains and they offered to give him a ride. He left the vette there. Funny how when you go in the snow, idiots with 4WD think its a license to drive like morons. Most wrecks I see are with 4Wd SUVs and BMW/Mercedes SUVs.

 

I like the Sierras, but in the winter it sucks because all the people from San Fran hit the slopes and traffic is awful. My wife and I go to Auburn all the time in the summer when its really hot. We swim in the American river in this area where two rivers run together. Around July the water is nice and warm and if you bring snorkeling equipment, you can see rainbow trout all over the place. Its like my favorite place to go. Just hang out under a bridge and swim all day.

 

Funny as all hell!!

You have to know the CA snots that drive the $100,000 SUV to really know how funny this is.

My favorite is the minivan's in the snow, but rice rockets are a close second though.

 

Ya, the mountains there near Tahoe and by Placerville are awesome. Great camping. Beautifull country.

 

A guy I work with says he has an awesome camping spot by the American river. He says the swimming is sweet too. I will have to check it out soon.

 

It's funny how cars are like statis symbols. Don't get me wrong, for what they are for, the $100,000 luxury cars are very nice. But in conditions other than dry pavment a $23,000 2wd and an average know how makes the "statis symbols" fall flat on their faces. Maybe Im just bitter, but when a grown ass many brings his family into a situation like that and has no idea what he is doing it kind of make me ashaimed to be a human being.
