    1) how are you going to use it ???

    2) Will it be permanent or something you want to "Yank" when not needed ???

    3) BUDGET ?????? remember a $400 radio with $5 antenna is NOT going to work....

Smaller Cobras can be had for $35.00 ( 19 model) with Small Unidens ( 510 & the new 505) can be had for $40....

The Compact Cobra 75WX-ST ( only thing visible is the MIKE) can be purchased for $90.

Do YOUR HOMEWORK and try a few on line CB stores not just the big "NET" stores...deals can be had by picking the phone up and calling a 1-800 #

Depending on how you run it 12ft should be enough. I used 18ft from the tailgate to the grommet under the driver's seat in a DCSB.

I had mine peaked and tuned from a radio shop. On cold and dry nights it would reach 40 miles. I also like the PA system. That worked really well. Hands down cobra makes the best compact radio.

It's dependent on the antenna length if I remember right. With CBs, you do NOT cut the coax. It has to be a certain length. I believe that with my 4' antenna, I needed 18' of cable, even though I went straight from the dash to the driver's side hood mount (see my build, link in signature). The next step was 36' I think?

Any extra cable should be laid flat along as much of the metal body of the truck to establish a sufficient ground plane. The best I can describe is laying it in a figure 8 along the wheel well, for example.
Do NOT coil the coax, kink the coax, or throw it in a heap. It will be detrimental to your range.

If you insist on cutting the coax to meet your desired length, you can get a no ground plane (NGP) antenna, but I think it requires extra work.

That's not a very good idea, unless you can guarantee the tool box shares a common ground with the rest of the truck.

I got the Cobra 29 LX. looks great, it's downside is no side band and the unit is rather large so your mounting options are limited.

Mines is mounted in the glove box.

Using a 4ft fiberglass antenna right now, gonna order a tune-able Firestik soon.

i did the center console for the same reason but i cant jam as much stuff as i used to in it now lol.

glove box would be annoying IMO just because you have to reach over when you need it. center console i just open and grab.

I redid the glove box so it only opens enough to access the CB radio. The Mic Cord is long enough when I do need it I can just lay it in the cup holders.

    completely stock
    not entirely true.

the tool box does not need to be on the same ground as the vehicle. the coax cable would give enough electrical ground and the tool box has plenty surface are for a sufficient ground plane. For 11 meter band (cb) you need a 6' or so ground plane. A tool box should provide plenty. the length of the coax doesnt really matter either to be honest. run the least amount needed to get to the antenna. extra should be coiled in a figure 8 like you mentioned to avoid impedance induced noise. the coax should be kept at least 12" away from a power source to reduce a chance of picking up alternator whine. keeping the cable close to a ground plane is not critical though.

I have a question for those of you that know CB models pretty well, is there a model that has just a faceplate somehow, so its pretty thin, that can be mounted overhead in that useless garage door opener thing that comes down? (for those of us without the temp gauge). Then I was thinking of installing a MIC outlet somewhere below in the cab, that runs up to the actual unit.
