Are these chips legit?

Anybody have any experience with these things?

you'd be better off wasting your money on these...

 

There is no way I would EVER buy something like this, or anything remotely close to it, much less attempt to put it on my vehicle. I have no personal experience but those claims just seem ludicrous! I've also had buddies who fell prey to these types of things, only to report that it either didn't work with their vehicle, or it did absolutely nothing performance wise. But it did provide them with the means to say "yeah bro, it's fast now since I got meh chip!"

 

When people ask about these I always tell them the following:

If there was a $70 way to make a truck get 7 more MPG, 60HP, lower emissions, and be 100% safe, pretty sure Toyota would have already been all up on that like a hooker on crack.

 

so does a legit "performance chip" exist?

 

A tune system exists for several vehicles out there. They reprogram part of the ECU and change engine parameters. That can help. However they are expensive and not just a plug-and-play type system.

From my experience, most "chips" for trucks are for diesel. In that case, the Edge is excellent. I had one of those on my Dodge 3500. It cost around $900.

 

It would be nice if something did work though. The power gain I had from that chip was ridiculous (80+ hp and 200 ft. lb. of torque on the highest setting). It also improved the fuel mileage significantly on the highway.

 

Performance chips suck ass. I had a $700.00 unichip on my 08 tundra. No change on dyno (mustang) before or after install. Left it on anyway because I spent the money on it. After a year it started to screw my truck up to the point my truck would turn off while driving and also would not shift in a higher gear than 2nd (auto trans). Called the company up and they passed the buck to the company that actually makes the unit (they are all made in South Africa). Ripped it out of my tundra and truck returned to normal. If you have added significant engine mods the best bet is to spend $600.00 and get it dyno tuned.
