anyone have any recommendations for dry skin? special shampoo or any of the fish oils work good?

his scabs looks so dry along with the rest of his skin so im sure its slowing down the healing.

I've got this shampoo from the vet. I'm supposed to wash the poopster once a week but I've found it depends largely on how his coat feels--much better result. Anyway, it does seem to help. This stuff.

Do you know if the dog has food allergies? I've discovered giving mine supplemental fish oil is a bad thing and makes him scratch like crazy. He eats Natures Domain sweet potato and salmon (from Costco). The salmon oils generally help with skin conditions but it would be good to know if he is allergic to the food before starting a supplement.

he doesnt have a local one yet, i was thinking of calling the one where he was initially taken to be treated since they know his exact condition first had and see if they recommend anything for him. i was wondering about joint supplements too since hes going to be working his back leg 2x's harder, i know the joint will wear out quicker.

that dog amazes me running up and down the stairs, i was 2/3 the way down before he started on them and he beat me

its sad when he tries to lift the wrong leg to pee...he just switches sides

it doesnt say anything about that, his vet records did mention he was covered in fleas so i doubt they fed him anything good. i was thinking about putting him on some stuff called 4 Health.

Maybe wait and see? He's had a rough time and getting him on a good quality food for a time and getting him cleaned up should go a long way.

You need to think about a flea, tick & heartworm med too so he doesn't have re-infestation. If he does, not only will it suck for him but literally for you too

If it's just dry skin, a good oatmeal shampoo or just plain oatmeal ground up and mixed with water and rubbed on him like a conditioner, then rinsed off.

If it's allergies, then try a different dog food. Could be hit or miss to see what the actual allergy is to.

im not sure if its allergies, maybe just not getting good quality food. i dont think shelters and fosters buy the expensive stuff. so i might start him on 4 Health or Blue Buffalo, neither have corn or by products which are no good. so i guess we will see what happens after that, im gonna get him a good moisturizing shampoo too.

Ot takes about a month to know what affect a new food will have. Beef, chicken and lamb are more likely to cause issues than turkey or salmon. High amounts of grain are also problematic. Sweet potato is good.

I went through four different foods before settling on the salmon and sweat potato. Allergy tests are expensive :( and the treatment could be as well. I worked with Riley's vet to arrive at the plan I used.

Usually you can go into the baby section and find a product that is labeled colloidial oatmeal that is used on kids when they have chicken pox or other scratch diseases. (I guess chicken pox is still around) That would be an excellent choice. Also you can call Blue Buffalo and they will recommend a food for you with his condition. Might try that as well...its free!
