easiest way to use ipod with stock radio?

Well I'm not much on the a/v technology, so I thought I would ask before I waste money or mess something up. I'm going to get an Ipod this Christmas and would like to listen to it in my truck. I want to keep my stock stereo, which is the 6 disc JBL (2006 model truck), and be able to use my steering controls to change songs. I do not think I want to use the FM signal thing; I had one before and it wasn't very clear. But it looks like all of the other ones require you to pull a wire from the back of the stereo and then cut it out somewhere in the dash? And also, from what I read it looked like you have to go through some process of selecting premade playlists, then selecting a certain CD slot, and all kind of other stuff? Like I said, I'm not big on this kind of stuff. I just want it to be as simple as possible so that I can jump in my truck and listen to my music.

From what I've read, it would be more simple if I got an aftermarket head unit, because then I could just plug the ipod in an aux cable and play my music; simple. Or some of them you can do via bluetooth. But I like the stock head unit and want to be able to use my factory controls. Somebody that has a clue about this stuff help me out! Also, will the type of ipod effect what I need? I haven't decided if I want the Ipod classic or the touch.

This is what I've got...works flawlessly...can use the steering wheel controls too.

 

I put a Grom in my truck about 9 months ago and it worked great for about 6 months. Now sometimes it locks up as often as every 10 seconds or maybe every 20 minutes or maybe not at all during my 45 minute trip. Sometimes the radio will not even register that there is an ipod hooked up. I just ordered an ipod-ready head unit (nothing fancy) from Crutchfield along with steering wheel controls. I'm tired of the frustration of not knowing if my radio will play my ipod. The Grom solution is a great solution as long as it works. Maybe my problem is an exception. I'm just sayin...
